Suspected gynecomastia?
Hello, doctor.
I started gaining weight in middle school, but I've lost some weight now that I'm in college.
I used to be chubby and had some breast tissue, but now that I've slimmed down to 175 cm and 67 kg, my breast size hasn't decreased.
I'm seeking my first consultation and would like to know which department I should register for.
This breast issue has been bothering me for a long time, and I can't feel like a typical guy because of it.
Thank you for your guidance!

Gynecomastia, or the enlargement of breast tissue in males, can be a source of significant psychological distress and embarrassment for many individuals. It is essential to understand the underlying causes and when to seek medical help. In your case, it seems that despite weight loss, you are still experiencing breast enlargement, which can be concerning.
First, it is important to note that gynecomastia can occur due to various reasons, including hormonal imbalances, certain medications, obesity, and underlying health conditions. In adolescents, it is often a temporary condition related to hormonal changes during puberty. However, if the condition persists into adulthood, it may require further evaluation.
Given your situation, where you have experienced breast enlargement since middle school and it has not improved with weight loss, it would be advisable to consult a healthcare professional. The appropriate specialist to see for gynecomastia is typically an endocrinologist or a urologist. An endocrinologist specializes in hormonal issues and can help determine if there is an underlying hormonal imbalance contributing to your condition. A urologist, on the other hand, can provide insights into male reproductive health and may also address gynecomastia.
When you visit the doctor, they will likely conduct a thorough medical history and physical examination. They may ask about any medications you are taking, family history of gynecomastia, and any other symptoms you may be experiencing. Blood tests may be ordered to check hormone levels, including testosterone and estrogen, as well as other relevant markers. Imaging studies, such as a mammogram or ultrasound, may also be performed to assess the breast tissue.
In terms of treatment, it depends on the underlying cause of the gynecomastia. If it is determined to be due to hormonal imbalances, treatment options may include medications that adjust hormone levels. In cases where gynecomastia is persistent and causes significant discomfort or psychological distress, surgical options such as liposuction or mastectomy may be considered.
It is also worth mentioning that lifestyle changes, including maintaining a healthy weight and avoiding substances that can contribute to gynecomastia (such as anabolic steroids, marijuana, and certain medications), can be beneficial. Engaging in regular physical activity and a balanced diet can help improve overall body composition and may reduce the appearance of gynecomastia.
In summary, if you have been struggling with breast enlargement and it has not improved with weight loss, it is essential to seek medical advice. An endocrinologist or urologist would be the appropriate specialists to consult. They can help determine the underlying cause of your gynecomastia and discuss potential treatment options. Remember, you are not alone in this, and there are effective ways to address your concerns.
