Preconception health checkup
Hello: I underwent a pre-marital health check in 2005 and successfully gave birth to my first child in 2007.
I am currently planning to conceive again in 2010.
Do I need to undergo a preconception health check again? If so, can I have it done at a regular obstetrics and gynecology clinic, or should I go to a larger hospital's obstetrics and gynecology department? Thank you!
Nina, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2009/05/18
Dr. Zhong Wenzhen reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
Hello, thank you for your inquiry.
I would like to respond to your question and provide the following recommendations: It is advisable to undergo regular prenatal check-ups, along with a Pap smear and breast examination prior to conception.
Lastly, I wish you safety and happiness.

When considering pre-pregnancy checkups, it is essential to understand that each pregnancy is unique, and health conditions can change over time. Given that you have successfully delivered a child in the past, it might seem unnecessary to undergo another pre-pregnancy checkup. However, there are several compelling reasons to consider doing so.
Firstly, pre-pregnancy checkups are crucial for assessing your overall health and identifying any potential issues that could affect your pregnancy. These checkups typically include a thorough medical history review, physical examination, and necessary laboratory tests. They can help identify conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, or thyroid disorders, which may not have been present or diagnosed during your previous pregnancy. Additionally, if you have experienced any significant health changes since your last checkup, it is wise to consult a healthcare provider.
Secondly, pre-pregnancy checkups provide an opportunity for health education and counseling. Your healthcare provider can discuss lifestyle modifications that can enhance your fertility and promote a healthy pregnancy. This includes advice on nutrition, exercise, and the importance of maintaining a healthy weight. They may also recommend taking prenatal vitamins, particularly folic acid, which is crucial for preventing neural tube defects in the developing fetus.
Regarding where to have your pre-pregnancy checkup, both general obstetrician-gynecologists (OB-GYNs) and specialized maternal-fetal medicine specialists can provide excellent care. If you have any specific health concerns or if you are considered high-risk due to age or medical history, visiting a larger hospital or a specialized clinic may be beneficial. These facilities often have access to advanced diagnostic tools and specialists who can provide comprehensive care.
In addition to the physical aspects, emotional and mental health is also a vital component of pre-pregnancy care. If you have any concerns about your mental well-being, discussing these with your healthcare provider can help ensure that you are in the best possible state to embark on another pregnancy journey.
Lastly, if you have any specific questions or concerns about your previous pregnancy or any family history of genetic disorders, it may be worthwhile to discuss genetic counseling during your pre-pregnancy checkup. This can provide valuable insights and help you make informed decisions regarding your pregnancy.
In summary, while you may have had a successful pregnancy in the past, it is advisable to undergo a pre-pregnancy checkup to ensure that you are in optimal health for your next pregnancy. This checkup can be done at a general OB-GYN office or a larger hospital, depending on your health needs and preferences. Taking this proactive step can help pave the way for a healthy and successful pregnancy.
