Hernia issues
Hello Doctor:
1.
I have previously undergone hernia surgery on the left side, and there has been a recurrence, although it has not significantly enlarged.
However, I am now experiencing hernia issues on the right side as well.
Could this affect my urination time? I find that my bathroom visits are generally normal, but they take a bit longer, and sometimes I need to exert a little effort to feel completely empty.
My colleagues joke about this topic, which is quite bothersome for me.
2.
I consulted a traditional Chinese medicine practitioner who mentioned that if left untreated, it could lead to long-term pressure on the bladder, potentially causing these symptoms.
Is there a connection?
3.
I kindly request your guidance on these matters.
Thank you.
Jing Ling, 40~49 year old female. Ask Date: 2009/07/05
Dr. Xu Weikai reply Urology
Hello, hernia surgery should not affect urination.
As for recurrence, it may require another surgery or the use of a synthetic mesh to reinforce the abdominal wall.
Additionally, hernias are often caused by increased abdominal pressure.
Therefore, after surgery, it is important to avoid: coughing, constipation, and difficulty urinating.
If any of these factors are present, they must be treated prior to surgery, and after surgery, it is essential to maintain good habits to prevent these symptoms from reoccurring.
If good practices are maintained, recurrence should not occur.
If there are any further questions or if you would like to discuss this in more detail, please feel free to ask.
Sincerely, Dr.
Hsu Wei-Kai, Urology Department, Taitung Hospital, Department of Health, Executive Yuan.

Hernias, particularly inguinal hernias, can indeed have implications for urinary health, especially when they occur in the groin area. Your concerns regarding the impact of your hernias on urinary function are valid and warrant a thorough understanding.
1. Impact of Hernias on Urination: Hernias can affect urinary function in a few ways. When a hernia occurs, it can create pressure on surrounding structures, including the bladder and urethra. This pressure may lead to symptoms such as difficulty initiating urination, a sensation of incomplete bladder emptying, or the need to strain during urination. In your case, the fact that you sometimes need to exert effort to feel that your bladder is completely empty could be related to the hernia's presence. It’s not uncommon for individuals with hernias to experience changes in urinary habits, particularly if the hernia is large or causing significant discomfort.
2. Long-term Effects of Untreated Hernias: If a hernia is left untreated, it can potentially lead to chronic pressure on the bladder. This pressure may contribute to urinary symptoms, including urgency, frequency, or even incontinence. The concern raised by your traditional Chinese medicine practitioner about the long-term effects of an untreated hernia is valid. Chronic pressure can lead to changes in bladder function over time, and it’s essential to monitor these symptoms closely.
3. Surgical Considerations: Given that you have already undergone surgery for a hernia on the left side and are experiencing symptoms on the right side, it may be beneficial to consult with a surgeon who specializes in hernia repair. They can evaluate the extent of your right-sided hernia and discuss the potential benefits of surgical intervention. Repairing the hernia may alleviate the pressure on your bladder and improve your urinary symptoms.
4. Other Factors to Consider: While hernias can influence urinary health, it’s also essential to consider other factors that may contribute to your symptoms. For example, urinary tract infections (UTIs), prostate issues (in males), or even lifestyle factors such as hydration and diet can play a role in urinary function. If you haven’t already, it may be worthwhile to discuss these aspects with your healthcare provider to rule out other potential causes of your urinary difficulties.
5. Lifestyle Modifications: In the meantime, consider lifestyle modifications that may help alleviate some of your symptoms. Staying well-hydrated can help ensure that your bladder functions optimally. Additionally, practicing pelvic floor exercises may strengthen the muscles involved in urination and improve your ability to empty your bladder completely.
In conclusion, while your hernias may be contributing to your urinary symptoms, it’s crucial to have a comprehensive evaluation by a healthcare professional. They can assess the severity of your hernias and recommend appropriate treatment options. Addressing the hernias may not only improve your urinary function but also enhance your overall quality of life. If you continue to experience discomfort or changes in your urinary habits, don’t hesitate to seek medical advice.
