An erection while lying down tends to point downward?
Hello, Doctor Hsu.
When lying down, my penis bends forward towards my feet at an angle of about 70 to 80 degrees when erect, rather than at a 90-degree angle with my body.
It is very firm, and even when I try to pull it forward with my hand, I can only get it to a 90-degree angle (it cannot point towards my body, and the penis itself has a slight curve).
Is this normal? Do I need to correct it? Since I have not had any sexual experience, will this angle allow for vaginal penetration if I am on top? Thank you for your response.
ZMC, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2009/07/08
Dr. Xu Weikai reply Urology
ZMC: Hello, very few men have a completely straight erection.
According to the definition of the condition, perhaps these individuals are considered abnormal.
Most people experience some degree of curvature.
As for whether it affects future sexual activity, generally, it is manageable unless the curvature angle is too severe.
Only the following two situations require correction of the curvature: 1.
Pain during erection 2.
Inability to achieve successful penetration.
Other situations are subjective.
It is important to understand that even after undergoing surgery to correct curvature, the penis will not be perfectly straight.
Even if it is corrected to be very straight during the procedure, some curvature may still develop after a period of time post-surgery.
If there are any unclear points, feel free to ask again for further discussion and research.
Sincerely, Dr.
Hsu Wei-Kai, Director of Urology, Taitung Hospital, Department of Health, Executive Yuan.

When it comes to the curvature of the penis during an erection, it's important to understand that variations in angle and shape are quite common and often fall within the range of normal anatomical differences. Based on your description, where your erect penis bends forward at an angle of approximately 70 to 80 degrees, this is generally considered within the realm of normal.
The penis can have a natural curve, and many men experience some degree of curvature. The key factors to consider are whether the curvature causes pain, discomfort, or difficulty during sexual intercourse. If the angle allows for penetration without causing pain or discomfort to either partner, then it is typically not a cause for concern.
Regarding your specific question about whether a penis that curves forward at this angle can still achieve successful penetration, the answer is yes. In a male-on-top position, the angle of the penis can still allow for insertion into the vagina, as the vagina is quite flexible and can accommodate various angles of penetration. The position of the partners can also be adjusted to facilitate comfortable penetration.
However, if you experience any pain during an erection or sexual activity, or if you notice that the curvature has increased over time, it may be worth consulting a healthcare professional. Conditions such as Peyronie's disease can cause significant curvature and may require medical intervention if they lead to pain or functional difficulties.
In terms of whether you need to correct the curvature, it largely depends on your personal comfort and any potential issues that arise during sexual activity. If the curvature does not interfere with your sexual function or cause discomfort, then correction may not be necessary. Surgical options exist for those who experience significant curvature that impacts sexual function, but these are typically reserved for more severe cases.
It's also worth noting that sexual experience and comfort can vary widely among individuals. If you have concerns about your anatomy or sexual health, discussing these with a healthcare provider can provide reassurance and guidance tailored to your specific situation.
In summary, a curvature of 70 to 80 degrees is generally considered normal, especially if it does not cause pain or interfere with sexual activity. If you have any concerns or experience discomfort, seeking medical advice is always a good step. Remember, open communication with your partner about comfort and preferences is key to a satisfying sexual experience.
