Chemotherapy - Removal of the IV catheter from the infusion bottle?
Hello, doctor! I live in Hsinchu, and my family member is undergoing chemotherapy for colon cancer with liver metastasis at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital.
However, we need to bring a milk bottle home for continued chemotherapy.
Since we need to return to the hospital in two days to remove the IV, we are concerned about the long trip back to Chang Gung.
I would like to know if there is a service at Hsinchu Hospital for removing IVs for chemotherapy patients.
If so, how can we proceed, and whom should we contact? Thank you!

When it comes to managing chemotherapy and the associated procedures such as needle removal, it's understandable that patients and their families seek local services to minimize travel and discomfort. In your case, with a family member undergoing chemotherapy for colon cancer with liver metastasis, the need for convenience and accessibility is paramount.
In Hsinchu, there are several healthcare facilities that may offer services for chemotherapy patients, including the removal of intravenous (IV) needles or ports. It is advisable to reach out to local hospitals or clinics that specialize in oncology or have a dedicated chemotherapy unit. Here are some steps you can take to find the appropriate services:
1. Contact Local Hospitals: Start by contacting hospitals in Hsinchu, such as Hsinchu Municipal Hospital or other private medical centers. Inquire if they have an oncology department that provides services for chemotherapy patients, including needle removal.
2. Ask About Outpatient Services: Many hospitals offer outpatient services for chemotherapy patients, which may include the ability to have needles removed without needing to go back to the original treatment facility. Ask if they have a dedicated outpatient chemotherapy unit.
3. Consult Your Current Oncologist: Since your family member is currently receiving treatment at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, it would be beneficial to discuss your situation with the oncologist or nursing staff there. They may have recommendations for local services or may even coordinate with a local facility to facilitate the needle removal.
4. Check with Oncology Nurses: Oncology nurses are often well-informed about local resources and services available for chemotherapy patients. They can provide guidance on where to go for needle removal and may even assist in making the necessary arrangements.
5. Look for Community Health Services: Some community health organizations or cancer support groups may offer resources or referrals for patients needing assistance with chemotherapy-related procedures.
6. Telehealth Options: If in-person visits are challenging, consider asking if your current healthcare provider offers telehealth consultations. This could allow you to discuss your needs and receive guidance without the need for travel.
In terms of how to proceed, once you identify a suitable facility, you can typically schedule an appointment by calling their oncology department directly. Be sure to have your family member's medical information handy, including their treatment history and any specific needs related to their chemotherapy.
In summary, while it may require some effort to find local services for needle removal in Hsinchu, there are likely options available. Engaging with your current healthcare providers and local hospitals will be key in ensuring that your family member receives the necessary care with minimal disruption to their treatment schedule. Remember, it's important to prioritize comfort and accessibility during this challenging time.
