Pain in the left side of the back during breathing?
Hello, Doctor.
I would like to ask you a question.
When I take deep breaths (especially when inhaling deeply), I experience pain in my left back, near the kidney area.
It doesn't feel like bone pain; it feels more like muscle pain or possibly pain from an internal organ.
I can't quite pinpoint the exact location of the pain, and when I tap on my entire back, it also feels painful.
What could this issue be? Which specialist should I see? Thank you for taking the time to answer my question!

We kindly suggest that you visit a pulmonology department.

More Info
Left back pain during deep breathing can be a concerning symptom, and it's understandable that you're seeking clarity on the potential causes and the appropriate specialist to consult. Based on your description, the pain seems to be localized near the kidney area and feels more muscular or visceral rather than bony. This distinction is important as it can help narrow down the potential causes.
Possible Causes of Left Back Pain During Deep Breathing
1. Musculoskeletal Issues: The most common cause of pain in the back during deep breathing is related to the muscles or ligaments in that area. Conditions such as muscle strains, ligament sprains, or even muscle spasms can lead to discomfort, especially when taking deep breaths. If you've recently engaged in any physical activity or even prolonged sitting, these could contribute to muscle tension.
2. Intercostal Muscle Strain: The intercostal muscles, which are located between your ribs, can become strained due to sudden movements, heavy lifting, or even coughing. This strain can cause pain that worsens with deep breathing, as these muscles are engaged during inhalation.
3. Rib Dysfunction: Sometimes, the ribs can become misaligned or dysfunctional, leading to pain that may radiate to the back. This can occur due to trauma or repetitive strain.
4. Pleuritis or Pleurisy: Inflammation of the pleura (the membranes surrounding the lungs) can cause sharp pain during deep breathing. This condition is often associated with respiratory infections or other lung issues.
5. Visceral Pain: Since you mentioned the pain feels like it might be coming from inside, it’s also worth considering that issues with internal organs, such as the kidneys or gastrointestinal tract, could be contributing to your discomfort. Conditions like kidney stones or infections can sometimes present as back pain.
6. Nerve-related Pain: Conditions such as a herniated disc or spinal nerve impingement can also lead to pain that radiates to the back and is exacerbated by deep breathing.
When to Seek Medical Attention
If your pain persists, worsens, or is accompanied by other symptoms such as fever, changes in urination, or significant discomfort, it is crucial to seek medical attention. Given the nature of your symptoms, the following specialists may be appropriate for consultation:
- Primary Care Physician: They can perform an initial evaluation, order necessary imaging (like X-rays or MRIs), and refer you to a specialist if needed.
- Orthopedic Specialist: If musculoskeletal issues are suspected, an orthopedic doctor can provide a thorough assessment and treatment options.
- Pulmonologist: If there is a concern about lung-related issues, a pulmonologist can evaluate respiratory function and any potential pleural conditions.
- Nephrologist: If kidney-related issues are suspected, a nephrologist can assess kidney function and any underlying conditions.
Conclusion
In summary, while left back pain during deep breathing can stem from various causes, the most likely culprits are musculoskeletal issues or intercostal muscle strain. However, given the complexity of the human body and the potential for visceral pain, it’s essential to monitor your symptoms closely. If the pain persists or worsens, don’t hesitate to consult a healthcare professional who can provide a comprehensive evaluation and guide you toward the appropriate treatment. Remember, early intervention can often lead to better outcomes, so seeking help sooner rather than later is advisable.
