Burning sensation in the urethra and discharge?
Hello, Dr.
Hsu.
Regarding my previous question: I have occasionally experienced a burning sensation in my urethra (not frequently), usually when urinating, and there is a clear discharge (not mucus) that has a pungent odor.
Sometimes this occurs after masturbation.
What could be the issue? Thank you for your response: I'm not sure what exactly is happening.
However, it is most likely caused by an infection.
I would like to ask you again, since I have never engaged in sexual intercourse, could I still be at risk of an infection? Could it be that frequent masturbation is causing urethritis? Thank you.
Xiao Dao, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2009/08/28

Hello, infection is not necessarily related to sexual activity; it can also occur due to insufficient water intake or holding in urine.
Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are not always sexually transmitted diseases.
Statistically, about one in five women will seek medical attention due to a UTI.
The term "infection" is a general term that includes conditions such as urethritis, prostatitis, and cystitis.
Frequent masturbation, in theory, would only lead to infection if there is a source of contamination, such as unclean clothing, bedding, or hands.
If there are any unclear points, feel free to ask again for further discussion and research.

Urethral burning and discharge can be concerning symptoms, and it’s important to understand the potential causes and implications. Based on your description, it sounds like you are experiencing a burning sensation during urination, accompanied by a clear discharge that has a strong odor. While you mentioned that you have not engaged in sexual intercourse, it is still possible to experience infections or irritations that can lead to these symptoms.
One of the most common causes of urethral burning and discharge is a urinary tract infection (UTI). UTIs can occur in individuals regardless of sexual activity, and they can be caused by bacteria entering the urinary tract. Symptoms of a UTI often include a burning sensation during urination, frequent urination, and sometimes a cloudy or foul-smelling urine. The clear discharge you described could also be a result of irritation or inflammation in the urethra.
Another potential cause could be urethritis, which is inflammation of the urethra. Urethritis can be caused by infections, including sexually transmitted infections (STIs), but it can also result from non-infectious factors such as irritation from soaps, lotions, or even frequent masturbation. While you mentioned that you have not had sexual intercourse, it is important to note that some STIs can be transmitted through non-penetrative sexual activities or even through contact with infected fluids.
Frequent masturbation can lead to irritation of the urethra, especially if it is done aggressively or without adequate lubrication. This irritation can manifest as a burning sensation and may also lead to a discharge. However, it is essential to differentiate between irritation and an actual infection, as the treatment approaches may differ.
Given your symptoms, it would be prudent to consult a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation. They may recommend a urinalysis or urine culture to check for the presence of bacteria or other pathogens. If an infection is confirmed, appropriate antibiotics can be prescribed. If the symptoms are due to irritation rather than an infection, your healthcare provider may suggest lifestyle modifications, such as reducing the frequency of masturbation, using lubrication, or avoiding irritants.
In summary, while your symptoms may not necessarily indicate a serious condition, they warrant further investigation to rule out infections or other underlying issues. It is always best to seek medical advice when experiencing unusual symptoms, as early diagnosis and treatment can prevent complications and promote better health outcomes.
