Urgency and Discomfort: When to Seek Urological Care - Urology

Strange

Hello doctor, I have been feeling a constant urge to urinate for the past couple of days.
Sometimes I feel a bloated sensation in my lower abdomen, but when I go to the bathroom, I am unable to urinate or the amount is significantly less than usual.
It feels like I've been holding it in for a long time.
What could these symptoms indicate? Do I need to undergo a urinalysis and culture?

Afan, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2009/10/19

Dr. Xu Weikai reply Urology

Hello, you may have a urinary tract infection, which is simply an inflammation of the urethra or bladder.
It is necessary to conduct urine tests, including cultures.
For maintenance of urinary tract health, you can use cranberry products.
If you have any further questions or need more details, feel free to ask, and we can discuss and research together.

Sincerely,
Dr.

More Info

The symptoms you are experiencing, such as a persistent feeling of urgency to urinate, a sensation of fullness in the lower abdomen, and difficulty urinating or producing only a small amount of urine, can be indicative of several potential urological issues. These symptoms may suggest conditions such as urinary tract infections (UTIs), bladder dysfunction, or even prostate issues in males.
1. Urinary Tract Infection (UTI): One of the most common causes of urgency and discomfort during urination is a UTI. Infections can irritate the bladder and urethra, leading to a strong urge to urinate, discomfort, and sometimes a feeling of incomplete emptying. If you have a UTI, you may also experience other symptoms such as burning during urination, cloudy or foul-smelling urine, and possibly fever or chills.

2. Bladder Dysfunction: Conditions such as overactive bladder can cause similar symptoms. This condition is characterized by an abnormal contraction of the bladder muscles, leading to frequent urges to urinate and sometimes incontinence.
3. Prostate Issues: In males, an enlarged prostate can lead to urinary symptoms, including urgency and difficulty urinating. This condition, known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), is common in older men and can cause a range of urinary symptoms.

4. Other Possible Causes: Other potential causes could include bladder stones, interstitial cystitis (a chronic condition causing bladder pressure and pain), or even neurological conditions that affect bladder control.

Given your symptoms, it is advisable to seek urological care. A healthcare provider will likely recommend a urinalysis and possibly a urine culture to check for infection or other abnormalities. These tests can help identify the presence of bacteria, blood, or other substances in the urine that could indicate an underlying issue.

In addition to laboratory tests, your doctor may perform a physical examination and ask about your medical history, including any previous urinary issues, medications, and lifestyle factors that could contribute to your symptoms. Depending on the findings, further diagnostic tests such as an ultrasound or cystoscopy may be warranted to assess the bladder and urinary tract more thoroughly.

It is important not to ignore these symptoms, especially if they persist or worsen. Early intervention can help prevent complications and improve your quality of life. If you experience severe pain, fever, or blood in your urine, seek medical attention promptly, as these could be signs of a more serious condition.

In summary, your symptoms warrant further investigation through urinalysis and possibly other diagnostic tests. Seeking urological care is a prudent step to determine the underlying cause and receive appropriate treatment.
