The hands are red, swollen, and cracking?
I would like to ask about my brother.
Ever since he started working in pig farming, his hands have been red, swollen, and cracking regardless of the season, to the point where he needs to tape them up.
Additionally, he has persistent acne on his face and very dry skin.
He previously visited a dermatologist, but it was ineffective, so he stopped going.
However, his hand symptoms are getting worse; not only does it look bad, but he has to keep tape on his hands all day, and they are red and swollen, cracking open, causing pain when the tape is not on.
He hasn't mentioned any itching.
If he needs to seek medical attention, are there any recommended hospitals, clinics, or doctors in Tainan? Thank you!

Hello: To be honest, I am older and live in the northern part of Taiwan, so I am not familiar with many of the rising stars in Tainan.
If I really had to recommend someone, I would suggest Dr.
Huang Jing-Yuan from Hsin-Lou Hospital.

More Info
It sounds like your brother is experiencing significant skin issues related to his work in the livestock industry, particularly with persistent swelling and cracking of the hands, as well as ongoing acne and dryness on his face. These symptoms can be quite distressing and may indicate a few underlying conditions that need to be addressed.
Firstly, the persistent hand swelling and cracking could be a form of contact dermatitis, which is common among individuals who work with animals or in environments where they are frequently exposed to irritants such as soaps, detergents, or even animal dander. This condition can lead to inflammation, redness, and cracking of the skin, especially if the skin barrier is compromised due to repeated exposure to irritants or allergens. Additionally, the cracking can become severe enough to require bandaging, as you mentioned.
To manage these symptoms, it is crucial to maintain proper skin care. Here are some recommendations:
1. Moisturization: Regularly applying a thick, emollient moisturizer can help restore the skin barrier and prevent further cracking. Look for products that contain ingredients like ceramides, glycerin, or petrolatum, which are effective in locking in moisture.
2. Avoid Irritants: Your brother should try to identify and avoid any specific irritants that may be exacerbating his condition. This may include certain soaps, cleaning agents, or even materials he comes into contact with at work. Wearing protective gloves while handling animals or cleaning can help minimize exposure.
3. Topical Treatments: If the condition is severe, a dermatologist may prescribe topical corticosteroids to reduce inflammation and promote healing. However, these should be used under medical supervision, especially on sensitive areas.
4. Hydration: Ensuring adequate hydration by drinking plenty of water can also help improve skin health.
Regarding the acne on his face, this could be exacerbated by hormonal changes, stress, or even the environment he is working in. A consistent skincare routine that includes gentle cleansing and non-comedogenic moisturizers can help manage acne. Over-the-counter treatments containing benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid may also be beneficial, but if these do not work, a dermatologist can provide stronger prescription options.
As for seeking medical help, it is advisable for your brother to consult a dermatologist who can provide a thorough evaluation and tailored treatment plan. In Tainan, there are several reputable dermatology clinics and hospitals. Some well-regarded options include:
- National Cheng Kung University Hospital: Known for its comprehensive dermatology department.
- Tainan Municipal Hospital: Offers a variety of dermatological services.
- Private dermatology clinics: There are many private practitioners in Tainan who specialize in skin conditions and may provide more personalized care.
It is essential for your brother to follow up with a healthcare professional, especially since his symptoms are worsening. A dermatologist can perform necessary tests to rule out any underlying conditions, such as eczema, psoriasis, or even infections, and provide appropriate treatment options.
In summary, your brother's symptoms of hand swelling and cracking, along with facial acne, warrant a thorough evaluation by a dermatologist. With proper care and treatment, it is possible to manage and improve his skin condition significantly.
