Can gastritis cause bleeding?
Recently, after my period stopped, I experienced diarrhea and noticed blood in my stool.
However, I believe it is related to gastritis.
Could this be due to gastritis? Is it normal to have diarrhea like this every day? What should I do?

Hello: Generally, with gastritis, you should not see blood when using the restroom.
Typically, bleeding from the stomach, after being mixed with digestive juices in the gastrointestinal tract, will cause the stool to appear dark green, black, or tarry.
You may also experience an increase in bowel movements, and when the volume is large, the stool may become loose and sticky due to accelerated gastrointestinal motility.
If the blood is bright red, it usually indicates that the bleeding source is at the anal or rectal area, with the most common causes being hemorrhoidal bleeding or colitis.
I would recommend that you consult a colorectal surgeon or a gastroenterologist for a definitive diagnosis.
Wishing you a speedy recovery.

Gastritis, an inflammation of the stomach lining, can indeed lead to bleeding, although the mechanisms and severity can vary widely. When discussing gastritis and its potential to cause gastrointestinal bleeding, it is essential to understand the underlying causes, symptoms, and the necessary steps for diagnosis and treatment.
Firstly, gastritis can be classified into acute and chronic forms. Acute gastritis often results from irritants such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), alcohol, or infections (like Helicobacter pylori). Chronic gastritis, on the other hand, may develop over time due to long-term exposure to these irritants or autoimmune conditions. In both cases, the inflammation can lead to erosion of the stomach lining, which may result in bleeding. This bleeding can manifest as hematemesis (vomiting blood) or melena (black, tarry stools), depending on the location and severity of the bleeding.
In your case, you mentioned experiencing diarrhea with blood after a missed menstrual period. While it is possible that gastritis could contribute to gastrointestinal bleeding, it is crucial to consider other potential causes. Diarrhea with blood can stem from various conditions, including infections (bacterial, viral, or parasitic), inflammatory bowel diseases (like Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis), or even hemorrhoids. Therefore, it is essential to consult a healthcare provider to determine the exact cause of your symptoms.
When evaluating whether gastritis is the culprit, healthcare professionals typically perform a thorough assessment, which may include a physical examination, a review of your medical history, and diagnostic tests such as blood tests, stool tests, or an endoscopy. An endoscopy allows direct visualization of the stomach lining and can help identify any lesions, ulcers, or signs of bleeding.
If gastritis is confirmed as the cause of your symptoms, treatment will depend on the underlying cause. For instance, if H. pylori infection is present, antibiotics and proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) may be prescribed to eradicate the bacteria and reduce stomach acid production, promoting healing. If NSAIDs or alcohol are contributing factors, discontinuing these substances is crucial. Additionally, dietary modifications, such as avoiding spicy, acidic, or irritating foods, can help alleviate symptoms.
Regarding your concern about the relationship between your menstrual cycle and gastrointestinal symptoms, it is worth noting that hormonal fluctuations can affect gastrointestinal motility and sensitivity. Stress, dietary changes, and other lifestyle factors can also contribute to gastrointestinal disturbances during this time. Therefore, it is essential to address both your gastrointestinal symptoms and any menstrual irregularities with your healthcare provider.
In summary, while gastritis can cause bleeding, it is vital to explore all potential causes of your symptoms. Seeking medical attention is crucial for accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment. If you experience persistent or severe symptoms, such as significant abdominal pain, ongoing diarrhea with blood, or signs of dehydration, do not hesitate to seek immediate medical care. Your health and well-being are paramount, and a healthcare professional can provide the guidance and treatment you need.
