Blurred vision?
I do not have myopia, but I recently noticed that after playing handheld gaming devices for about 10 to 20 minutes, my vision becomes blurry and unclear.
It takes about 20 to 30 minutes for my vision to return to normal.
I also use a computer for long periods, but I do not experience this phenomenon afterward.
What could be the reason for this? Will it become more severe over time?

Dr. Gao Pilin reply Ophthalmology
Hello Ms.
Lin, the situation you described is caused by excessive tension in the ciliary muscles of the eyes.
This is especially true when focusing intently on nearby objects.
When looking at a computer screen, the distance is greater and the tension is not as high, so this phenomenon does not occur.
There's no need to worry; just make sure to rest more.
Thank you for your message.

Blurred vision after gaming, especially when using handheld devices, is a common issue that many people experience. This phenomenon can be attributed to several factors, primarily related to eye strain and the physiological responses of the eyes when focusing on screens for extended periods.
One of the main causes of blurred vision after playing games is the overexertion of the ciliary muscles, which are responsible for adjusting the lens of the eye to focus on nearby objects. When you play handheld games, your eyes are often fixed on a small screen at a close distance, which requires significant effort from these muscles. This prolonged focus can lead to a temporary condition known as "accommodative spasm," where the muscles become fatigued and struggle to relax, resulting in blurred vision when you try to look at objects further away.
In contrast, when using a computer, the distance to the screen is generally greater, and the visual demands may be less intense, especially if you are taking regular breaks or using proper ergonomics. This difference in distance and the nature of the task can explain why you do not experience the same blurriness after extended computer use.
Another contributing factor could be the phenomenon known as "digital eye strain" or "computer vision syndrome," which encompasses a range of symptoms including blurred vision, dry eyes, and headaches, resulting from prolonged screen time. Symptoms can be exacerbated by factors such as poor lighting, glare from screens, and improper viewing distances.
Regarding your concern about whether this issue will worsen over time, it is essential to note that while occasional blurred vision after gaming is typically not a cause for alarm, consistently straining your eyes without proper breaks can lead to more persistent issues. Over time, if you do not adopt healthier viewing habits, you may experience more frequent symptoms or even develop chronic eye strain.
To mitigate these symptoms, consider implementing the following strategies:
1. Take Regular Breaks: Follow the 20-20-20 rule, which suggests that every 20 minutes, you should look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. This helps relax the ciliary muscles and reduces eye strain.
2. Adjust Lighting: Ensure that the room is well-lit to reduce glare on the screen. Avoid playing in dark rooms, as this can increase the contrast between the screen and the surrounding environment, leading to more strain.
3. Maintain Proper Distance: Keep the handheld device at a comfortable distance, ideally around 16 to 18 inches from your eyes. This distance can help reduce the strain on your eyes.
4. Blink Frequently: When focusing on screens, people tend to blink less, which can lead to dry eyes. Make a conscious effort to blink more often to keep your eyes moist.
5. Consider Eye Exercises: Simple eye exercises can help strengthen the eye muscles and improve flexibility. For example, try focusing on a near object for a few seconds and then switching to a distant object.
6. Consult an Eye Care Professional: If the blurred vision persists or worsens, it is advisable to consult an eye care professional for a comprehensive eye examination. They can assess your vision and provide personalized recommendations.
In summary, while blurred vision after gaming is often a temporary and manageable issue, it is crucial to adopt healthy habits to protect your eye health in the long run. By being mindful of your screen time and taking proactive measures, you can enjoy gaming without compromising your vision.
