Posterisan Forte Ointment

My father has been purchasing Posterisan Forte Ointment at the pharmacy to alleviate his hemorrhoid symptoms.
He is currently undergoing radiation therapy for prostate cancer and would like to use this ointment to relieve discomfort around the anal area caused by the radiation treatment.
However, this ointment is no longer available in Taiwan.
Is there an alternative name for this medication or a similar ointment with comparable effects? Thank you!

Dr. Huang Shenggang reply Pharmacology

Hello: Regarding Posterisan Forte Ointment, it is an imported medication that had its drug license revoked in Taiwan on March 6, 2009.
Currently, there are no ointments with the same active ingredients available domestically.
It is recommended to consult a physician for treatment and consider using XYLMOL OINTMENT (Xiyu Zhi Soft Ointment) which has similar indications.

When it comes to managing discomfort associated with radiation therapy, particularly for patients undergoing treatment for prostate cancer, it is essential to consider alternatives to Posterisan Forte Ointment, especially if it is not available in your region. Posterisan Forte is typically used to alleviate symptoms related to hemorrhoids and anal discomfort, primarily due to its active ingredients that promote healing and reduce inflammation.

For patients experiencing discomfort in the anal area due to radiation therapy, there are several alternatives that can be considered:
1. Hydrocortisone Cream: This topical corticosteroid can help reduce inflammation and itching. It is often used for various skin irritations, including those caused by radiation therapy. However, it should be used under the guidance of a healthcare provider to avoid potential side effects from prolonged use.

2. Zinc Oxide Ointment: Commonly used in diaper rash creams, zinc oxide can provide a protective barrier and help soothe irritated skin. It is safe for use in sensitive areas and can help with healing.

3. Aloe Vera Gel: Known for its soothing properties, aloe vera can be applied to the affected area to provide relief from irritation and promote healing. It is a natural option that is generally well-tolerated.

4. Calendula Cream: This herbal remedy is known for its anti-inflammatory and healing properties. Calendula can be applied topically to help soothe irritated skin and promote healing.

5. Moisturizing Creams: Regular application of a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizing cream can help keep the skin hydrated and reduce discomfort. Look for products that are specifically designed for sensitive skin.

6. Sitz Baths: While not a topical treatment, taking warm sitz baths can provide significant relief from discomfort. This involves sitting in a few inches of warm water, which can help soothe the anal area and promote relaxation.

7. Prescription Options: If over-the-counter options are insufficient, it may be worthwhile to discuss with your father's healthcare provider about prescription medications or topical treatments that can be more effective for managing radiation-induced discomfort.

8. Pain Management: In some cases, oral pain relievers such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen may be recommended to help manage discomfort. However, it is crucial to consult with a healthcare provider before starting any new medication, especially considering your father's overall health and any other medications he may be taking.

It is important to communicate with your father's oncologist or healthcare team regarding any discomfort he is experiencing due to radiation therapy. They can provide personalized recommendations based on his specific situation and may also have access to alternative formulations or treatments that are not widely available.

In summary, while Posterisan Forte Ointment may not be available, there are several alternatives that can help alleviate discomfort associated with radiation therapy. Always consult with a healthcare professional before making changes to treatment plans or trying new products, especially in the context of cancer treatment.
