How long does it take for the anesthesia to wear off after a mucous cyst surgery?
I developed a mucous cyst on my right lip, and the doctor recommended surgical removal.
I received two doses of anesthesia.
After the surgery, the doctor mentioned that the anesthesia would wear off in about half an hour.
However, two hours post-operation, the surgical site was slightly painful, which I assumed was due to the anesthesia wearing off.
The pain subsided shortly after, but now, 12 hours later, my lip still feels numb, and I have very little sensation even when I touch it.
How long will it take for the numbness to completely go away? Is it possible that a nerve was injured? Thank you for your response.

Dr. Zeng Guanghui reply Dentistry
Hello, Miss: Thank you for your inquiry.
I would like to respond to your question and provide the following advice: During the surgery for a mucous cyst, local anesthesia is typically used.
If the postoperative wound is not large, the area of local anesthesia should be limited to the mucosa of the lower lip, and it will gradually wear off in about 2-3 hours.
If you still experience numbness in your lip after 12 hours, it is advisable to return for further evaluation.
Lastly, I wish you safety and happiness~~

After mucous cyst surgery, the duration of anesthesia can vary significantly based on several factors, including the type of anesthesia used, the individual patient's metabolism, and the specific surgical procedure performed. In your case, it sounds like you received local anesthesia, which is commonly used for minor procedures like the removal of a mucous cyst.
Typically, local anesthesia begins to wear off within a few hours after the procedure. The initial numbness may last anywhere from 1 to 6 hours, depending on the anesthetic agent used. For instance, lidocaine, a common local anesthetic, usually provides numbness for about 1 to 3 hours, while bupivacaine can last longer, sometimes up to 6 hours or more. However, the sensation of numbness can linger for a longer period, especially if the anesthetic was injected near a nerve.
In your case, experiencing numbness 12 hours post-surgery is not uncommon, particularly if the anesthetic was injected near a nerve or if a longer-acting anesthetic was used. The fact that you felt some pain after a couple of hours suggests that the anesthesia was wearing off, but the lingering numbness could be due to the local anesthetic still being present in the tissue or irritation of the nerve during the procedure.
It is also important to consider that some patients may experience prolonged numbness or altered sensation after local anesthesia, which can be due to several factors, including:
1. Nerve Proximity: If the anesthetic was injected close to a nerve, it might take longer for the nerve to recover from the anesthetic effects.
2. Surgical Trauma: The surgical procedure itself can cause temporary nerve irritation or swelling, which may prolong the numbness.
3. Individual Variation: Each person's body metabolizes anesthetics differently, and some may experience prolonged effects.
If the numbness persists beyond 24 hours or if you experience additional symptoms such as severe pain, swelling, or changes in color around the surgical site, it would be advisable to contact your surgeon or healthcare provider. They can assess whether there is any nerve damage or other complications that need to be addressed.
In summary, while it is generally expected for local anesthesia to wear off within a few hours, lingering numbness can occur and is often not a cause for concern. However, monitoring your symptoms and consulting with your healthcare provider if you have any worries is always a good practice. They can provide you with the most accurate information based on your specific situation and medical history.
