Can the angle of erection be treated?
Hello, doctor.
What are the causes that affect the angle of penile erection? When I was in middle school, I noticed that my erection angle was about 90 degrees (parallel to the ground), while most of my classmates had angles of at least 135 degrees or even 180 degrees (against the abdomen).
Later, when I watched videos online, I found that most had angles between 135 and 180 degrees.
There were a few with 90 degrees, but they were quite rare, about one in twenty.
This angle has made me feel very insecure, and I am unsure how to treat the erection angle.
There are products on the market that claim to fix the erection angle, as well as special underwear.
Do these work, or is surgical treatment necessary? I would appreciate your guidance.
Thank you.

Dr. Xu Weikai reply Urology
Hello, the angle of penile erection varies from person to person, and Western medicine does not define a "normal" angle.
From a Western medical perspective, as long as sexual intercourse is possible, it is considered normal and does not require surgical correction.
The key factor in Western medicine is the pressure during erection; therefore, there are tools available to measure penile pressure.
If you are interested, you can seek related examinations at larger hospitals.
A smaller penis or higher rigidity during erection, or congenital factors, can naturally result in a larger angle during erection.
Additionally, the same individual may exhibit different angles during different erections.
If there are any unclear points, feel free to ask again for further discussion and research.
Sincerely, Dr.

More Info
The angle of erection, or the angle at which the penis points when erect, can vary significantly among individuals. A typical angle ranges from about 135 degrees to 180 degrees, with some men experiencing a more horizontal angle, such as 90 degrees. This variation can be influenced by several factors, including anatomical differences, psychological factors, and even underlying medical conditions.
Causes of Erection Angle Variability
1. Anatomical Differences: The structure of the penis, including the length and elasticity of the corpora cavernosa (the erectile tissue), can affect the angle of erection. Additionally, the positioning of the ligaments that support the penis can also play a role.
2. Psychological Factors: Anxiety, self-esteem issues, and body image concerns can impact sexual performance and perception. If a person feels self-conscious about their erection angle, it may lead to performance anxiety, which can further affect the angle and quality of erections.
3. Medical Conditions: Certain medical conditions, such as Peyronie's disease, can cause curvature or changes in the angle of erection due to scar tissue formation within the penis. Other conditions, such as hormonal imbalances or erectile dysfunction, may also contribute to changes in erection angle.
Treatment Options
If the angle of erection is causing significant distress or impacting sexual function, there are several approaches to consider:
1. Consultation with a Specialist: The first step should be to consult a urologist or a sexual health specialist. They can provide a thorough evaluation to determine if there are any underlying medical issues that need to be addressed.
2. Psychological Counseling: If self-esteem or anxiety is a concern, speaking with a mental health professional can be beneficial. Therapy can help address body image issues and improve confidence.
3. Non-Surgical Devices: There are devices available that claim to help adjust or support the angle of erection. These may include specially designed underwear or external devices. However, the effectiveness of these products can vary, and it is essential to approach them with caution. Consulting with a healthcare provider before using such devices is advisable.
4. Surgical Options: In cases where there is a significant curvature or if the angle is associated with a medical condition like Peyronie's disease, surgical intervention may be considered. Surgical options can include procedures to correct curvature or to enhance the angle of erection. However, surgery carries risks and should be considered only after thorough discussion with a qualified urologist.
5. Lifestyle Modifications: Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including regular exercise, a balanced diet, and avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol consumption, can improve overall erectile function and may positively influence erection angle.
Conclusion
It is important to remember that variations in erection angle are common and can be influenced by many factors. If the angle of erection is causing significant distress or impacting sexual relationships, seeking professional advice is crucial. A healthcare provider can help determine the best course of action, whether it involves medical treatment, psychological support, or lifestyle changes. Open communication with partners about concerns can also alleviate some anxiety and improve sexual experiences.
