Pearl-like penile papules

Doctor: Hello, I would like to ask if pearly penile papules can appear in locations other than the junction of the glans and the shaft of the penis.
I have this condition and recently noticed a few small white protrusions near the penile frenulum.
They are painless, itch-free, and cannot be squeezed out.
Since I have not engaged in any sexual activities or visited places like saunas, I would like to know if this could also be pearly penile papules.

Chihkuan, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2010/02/23

Dr. Xu Weikai reply Urology

More Info

Pearly penile papules (PPP) are small, benign growths that typically appear around the corona of the glans penis. They are often described as small, white or flesh-colored bumps that can be mistaken for other conditions, but they are completely harmless and do not require treatment.
To address your specific question, while PPP most commonly appears at the junction of the glans and the shaft of the penis, they can also be found in other areas close to the glans, including the frenulum (the band of tissue on the underside of the penis that connects the glans to the shaft). The presence of small, white, painless bumps in this area, especially if they are similar in appearance to those typically found around the corona, is consistent with PPP.

It's important to note that PPP are not associated with any sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and are not contagious. They are a normal anatomical variation and are most commonly seen in young adult males. The fact that you have not engaged in sexual activity or visited places like saunas does not change the likelihood of having PPP, as they are not related to sexual behavior or hygiene.

In terms of symptoms, PPP are generally asymptomatic, meaning they do not cause pain, itching, or discomfort. They cannot be squeezed or popped, which is a characteristic feature that helps differentiate them from other conditions like pearly penile papules or genital warts.
If you are concerned about the appearance of these bumps or if you notice any changes in size, color, or if they become painful or itchy, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional. They can provide a proper diagnosis and rule out other conditions, such as genital warts or other dermatological issues.
In summary, based on your description, it is likely that the small white protrusions you are observing near the frenulum are indeed pearly penile papules. However, if you have any doubts or concerns, seeking a professional evaluation would be the best course of action to ensure peace of mind and proper understanding of your condition.
