Postoperative Questions About Hemorrhoid Surgery
Hello doctor, I had a mixed hemorrhoid surgery on April 16.
On the third day post-operation (April 19), shortly after having a bowel movement, I experienced severe abdominal cramps and thought it was diarrhea.
However, I ended up bleeding profusely.
I went to the emergency room for observation, and the doctor said everything was fine.
On the fourth day (April 20), I had three bowel movements in the evening, all of which were dark-colored blood stools.
Fortunately, on the fifth day (April 21), I did not have that issue anymore.
However, I am curious as to why I feel the urge to have a bowel movement shortly after eating my meals.
Is this a normal phenomenon? Note: On the fifth day, my bowel movements had almost no blood and were of normal size, just a bit softer (because I took a stool softener).

Based on your description, these issues are common during the postoperative recovery period and may sometimes be related to medication or the surgery itself.
Please take some time to discuss this with your attending surgeon for potentially more satisfactory outcomes.
Thank you.

After undergoing hemorrhoid surgery, it is not uncommon to experience a variety of bowel-related concerns, particularly in the initial days following the procedure. Your experience of significant bleeding and abdominal pain shortly after your surgery is understandably alarming, but it appears that the medical team has assessed your condition and determined that there is no immediate cause for concern.
Bleeding after hemorrhoid surgery can occur, especially in the first few days, as the surgical site is still healing. The presence of dark-colored blood in your stool can be attributed to several factors, including the healing process, the use of stool softeners, and the potential for minor irritation or trauma to the surgical site. It is essential to monitor the situation closely, as you have done, and to seek medical attention if the bleeding resumes or worsens.
Regarding your question about the urgency to have a bowel movement shortly after meals, this phenomenon can be attributed to several factors. After surgery, your body may react differently to food intake due to changes in your digestive system and the healing process. The presence of stool softeners in your regimen can also contribute to more frequent bowel movements, as they help to ease the passage of stool, making it easier to have a bowel movement.
The gastrocolic reflex, which is a natural response of the colon to food intake, may also be more pronounced in your case. This reflex stimulates the colon to contract and move contents along the digestive tract after eating, which can lead to the urge to have a bowel movement shortly after meals. It is a normal physiological response, but if it becomes bothersome or is accompanied by pain or discomfort, it would be advisable to discuss this with your healthcare provider.
As you continue your recovery, it is crucial to maintain open communication with your healthcare team. They can provide guidance on managing your symptoms and ensuring that your recovery progresses smoothly. If you experience any new symptoms, such as increased pain, persistent bleeding, or changes in bowel habits, do not hesitate to reach out for further evaluation.
In summary, while your experiences post-surgery may be concerning, they can often be explained by the body's healing process and the effects of medications. As you recover, focus on maintaining a balanced diet, staying hydrated, and following your doctor's recommendations regarding medications and follow-up appointments. If you have any lingering concerns or if your symptoms change, consult your healthcare provider for personalized advice and reassurance.
