Post-rhinoplasty
Hello, doctor.
I had a rhinoplasty about 4 years ago.
Since then, a small raised lesion has appeared on the inside of my nose.
It is painless and does not affect the appearance of my nose, but I can feel it when I pick my nose.
Is there a way to remove this foreign body? If I do not remove it, will it have any impact on my health? Thank you.

Dr. Zhou Hongzhang reply Plastic Surgery
1.
If you are using an "I" shaped model, it is more likely to displace and puncture the skin, leading to the formation of a raised lesion (a phenomenon that occurs just before puncturing), or 2.
a raised lesion caused by infection (abscess) or fibrosis.
It is best to visit an outpatient clinic for examination or further testing.

Hello! Thank you for your question regarding the small bump that has developed inside your nose after rhinoplasty. It's understandable to be concerned about any changes in your body, especially after undergoing a surgical procedure like rhinoplasty.
First, it's important to recognize that the formation of small bumps or nodules inside the nose after rhinoplasty can occur for various reasons. These may include scar tissue formation, the presence of residual or displaced implant material, or even the development of a benign growth such as a polyp. Since you mentioned that the bump is not painful or itchy and does not affect the external appearance of your nose, it may not be a cause for immediate concern. However, it is still advisable to monitor it for any changes in size, shape, or symptoms.
Regarding your question about removal, there are a few options to consider. If the bump is bothersome or if you are concerned about its nature, the best course of action would be to consult with a qualified plastic surgeon or an otolaryngologist (ear, nose, and throat specialist). They can perform a thorough examination, possibly including imaging studies if necessary, to determine the exact nature of the bump. If it is deemed appropriate, they can discuss options for removal, which may involve a minor surgical procedure.
As for the potential health implications of leaving the bump untreated, it largely depends on its nature. If it is simply scar tissue or a benign growth, it is unlikely to pose any significant health risks. However, if it is related to an implant or if it becomes infected or inflamed, it could lead to complications. Therefore, it is essential to have a professional evaluation to rule out any serious issues.
In addition to surgical options, there are also non-surgical approaches that may help, depending on the diagnosis. For instance, if the bump is due to inflammation or irritation, corticosteroid injections might be considered to reduce swelling. However, this would need to be discussed with your healthcare provider.
In summary, while the bump you are experiencing may not currently pose a significant issue, it is wise to seek professional advice to ensure that it is not indicative of a more serious problem. Regular follow-ups with your surgeon or a specialist can help you maintain the best possible outcome after your rhinoplasty. Remember, your health and peace of mind are paramount, so don't hesitate to reach out for a consultation. Thank you for your inquiry, and I wish you the best in your continued recovery and health!
