Do Herbal Masks Really Bring Blackheads to the Surface? - Traditional Chinese Medicine

Share to:

excuse me?

Hello Dr.
Ding, I have a question I would like to ask.
I bought a herbal acne mask powder that has a strong aroma of Angelica dahurica, but the powder is a yellowish-brown color.
This mask really makes the blackheads beneath the skin surface come out quite quickly.
I would like to know if there are indeed herbal ingredients that can cause blackheads to surface on their own, or if there is a specific formula that produces this effect.
Although my skin hasn't shown any adverse reactions so far, I still have some concerns.
Could you please help me with this? Thank you.

K, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2010/05/01

Dr. Ding Hanxiang reply Traditional Chinese Medicine

Hello: Angelica dahurica (Bai Zhi) has a pungent and warm nature, with effects including promoting sweating, dispelling wind and dampness, unblocking orifices and alleviating pain, reducing swelling and expelling pus, invigorating blood circulation, stopping bleeding, and promoting tissue regeneration.
It is primarily used to treat external wind-cold, nasal congestion, headaches, nasal discharge, dental pain, rheumatic pain, skin itching due to wind-dampness, women's leukorrhea (both red and white), and abscesses or swellings.
In addition to topical medications for acne, diet and lifestyle habits are also very important.
Wishing you peace and health.
Sincerely, Dr.
Ding Han-Hsiang, Attending Physician, Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Taoyuan Hospital, Ministry of Health and Welfare.

Herbal masks, particularly those containing traditional Chinese medicinal ingredients, have gained popularity for their purported benefits in skincare, including the claim that they can bring blackheads to the surface. However, the effectiveness of such masks can vary significantly based on their specific ingredients and the individual's skin type.

Blackheads are a type of acne that occurs when hair follicles become clogged with oil and dead skin cells. They are characterized by their dark appearance, which is due to oxidation of the material in the clogged pore. The idea behind using herbal masks to bring blackheads to the surface is that certain ingredients may help to exfoliate the skin, unclog pores, and promote the shedding of dead skin cells.

In traditional Chinese medicine, various herbs are believed to have properties that can benefit the skin. For example, ingredients like white peony (白芍), licorice root (甘草), and bamboo charcoal are often included in formulations aimed at purifying the skin and reducing excess oil. However, while these ingredients may have some beneficial effects, there is limited scientific evidence to support the claim that they can specifically draw blackheads to the surface.

The effectiveness of a mask in bringing blackheads to the surface may depend on several factors:
1. Exfoliation: Many herbal masks contain exfoliating agents that can help remove dead skin cells and unclog pores. This can lead to a reduction in blackheads over time. However, the process is gradual and may not result in immediate visible changes.

2. Oil Control: Ingredients that help regulate oil production can also play a role in preventing the formation of new blackheads. If the mask helps to balance oil levels, it may reduce the occurrence of blackheads in the long run.

3. Skin Type: Individual skin types react differently to various ingredients. What works for one person may not work for another. It's essential to consider your skin type and any sensitivities you may have when using herbal products.

4. Formulation: The specific combination of ingredients in the mask is crucial. Some herbal masks may contain a blend of effective components that can aid in clearing blackheads, while others may not have the same potency.

5. Consistency of Use: Regular use of the mask, combined with a comprehensive skincare routine that includes cleansing, exfoliating, and moisturizing, can enhance results. However, overuse of any product can lead to irritation, so it's important to follow the manufacturer's instructions.

While you mentioned that you have not experienced any adverse effects from using the herbal mask, it's always wise to perform a patch test before applying new products to your entire face. Additionally, if you have persistent blackheads or other skin concerns, consulting with a dermatologist is advisable. They can provide tailored recommendations and treatments that may be more effective than over-the-counter products.

In conclusion, while certain herbal masks may help with blackheads due to their exfoliating and oil-controlling properties, the claim that they can bring blackheads to the surface quickly should be approached with caution. The results can vary, and it is essential to maintain a balanced skincare routine for the best outcomes.
