Should circumcision be performed with the "breathable tape method"?
Hello doctor, I am a high school student facing the decision of whether to undergo circumcision.
My situation is as follows: when not erect, the foreskin covers the entire glans, but during an erection, about half of the glans is exposed.
I can also pull the foreskin back to the coronal sulcus without pain, and I regularly clean the area thoroughly.
There are no other issues.
So, do I need to get circumcised?
My second question is that I saw online that some people recommend using the "breathable tape method," which supposedly eliminates the need for circumcision.
This method seems to reduce the sensitivity of the glans, and the appearance afterward resembles that of someone who has been circumcised.
I am very interested in trying this, and of course, I would be very careful.
Would you recommend this approach, doctor?

Mr.
K: Hello, based on your description, it seems quite normal, and you likely do not need to undergo a circumcision.
The use of breathable tape is not considered a standard medical practice, and I am unsure of its effectiveness.
If there are any unclear points, feel free to ask again, and we can discuss and research further.

Deciding whether to undergo circumcision is a significant choice that can have both physical and psychological implications. Based on your description, it appears that you have a functional foreskin that does not cause you any pain or hygiene issues. In general, circumcision is often recommended for medical reasons such as recurrent infections, phimosis (where the foreskin cannot be retracted), or other complications. Since you mentioned that you can retract your foreskin without pain and maintain proper hygiene, it may not be necessary for you to undergo the procedure.
Circumcision can provide certain benefits, including a reduced risk of urinary tract infections, sexually transmitted infections, and penile cancer. However, these benefits must be weighed against the risks and potential complications of the surgery, which can include bleeding, infection, and changes in sensitivity. Given that you do not have any current medical issues related to your foreskin, it may be prudent to consider non-surgical options first.
Regarding the "breathable tape method," this is a technique some individuals have explored as an alternative to circumcision. The idea is to use a breathable tape to keep the foreskin retracted, which may help desensitize the glans (the head of the penis) over time. While some anecdotal reports suggest that this method can be effective, it is important to approach it with caution. There are several factors to consider:
1. Skin Irritation: Prolonged use of tape can lead to skin irritation or allergic reactions. It's crucial to monitor the skin for any signs of redness, swelling, or discomfort.
2. Hygiene: Maintaining proper hygiene is essential, especially when using tape. Ensure that the area is clean and dry to prevent infections.
3. Sensitivity Changes: While the goal may be to reduce sensitivity, it is important to understand that this method may not work for everyone, and the long-term effects on sensitivity are not well-studied.
4. Consultation with a Healthcare Professional: Before trying any new method, including the breathable tape, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare professional. They can provide personalized advice based on your specific situation and help you understand the potential risks and benefits.
5. Psychological Considerations: It's also worth considering the psychological aspects of both circumcision and alternative methods. Some individuals may feel more comfortable with their bodies after circumcision, while others may prefer to keep their foreskin. Understanding your feelings about this decision is important.
In conclusion, if you are not experiencing any medical issues related to your foreskin and can maintain proper hygiene, circumcision may not be necessary. The breathable tape method could be an option, but it is essential to approach it carefully and consult with a healthcare professional for guidance. Ultimately, the decision should be based on your personal comfort, health considerations, and professional medical advice.
