Impact of Husband's Medications on Pregnancy: What to Know - Obstetrics and Gynecology

Pregnancy

I have a question...
My husband has onychomycosis and has been taking medication (Griseofulvin) for 2 months.
He also received the first dose of the hepatitis B vaccine.
My last menstrual period was on March 21, and I haven't gotten my period this month, so I checked for pregnancy (I'm one month pregnant).
Will my husband's medication and vaccination affect the baby? Is it safe to have the baby?

Xiu'e, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2010/05/03

Dr. Lü Lizheng reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Dear Hsiu-O:
Basically, the medication and vaccination that your husband received do not have any impact.
Even if there were an effect, it would only affect his sperm; if the sperm were indeed affected, it would not be able to fertilize the egg, and pregnancy would not occur.
Therefore, you can become pregnant, which proves that the sperm has not been affected and will not impact the child.

Wishing you peace and health,
Dr.

When considering the impact of a husband's medications and vaccinations on pregnancy, it's essential to understand the nature of the medications and vaccines involved, as well as the timing of their administration in relation to conception.

In your case, your husband has been taking a medication called "黴星平" (likely Terbinafine, used for fungal infections like onychomycosis or nail fungus) for two months and has also received the first dose of the hepatitis B vaccine. Both of these interventions are generally considered safe in the context of pregnancy, but let's break down their potential impacts:
1. Terbinafine (黴星平): This antifungal medication is typically used to treat fungal infections of the skin and nails. According to available data, terbinafine is classified as a Category B drug by the FDA. This means that animal reproduction studies have not demonstrated a risk to the fetus, and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Therefore, the use of terbinafine by your husband prior to conception is unlikely to have any adverse effects on the pregnancy or the developing fetus.

2. Hepatitis B Vaccine: Vaccination against hepatitis B is recommended for both men and women, especially for those who are planning to conceive. The vaccine is considered safe during pregnancy and does not pose any risk to the fetus. In fact, it helps protect the mother and the child from hepatitis B infection, which can have serious consequences for both.

3. Timing of Medication and Vaccination: Since your husband has been on the antifungal medication for two months and has received the hepatitis B vaccine, it is important to note that these treatments were completed before your conception. The medications and vaccines taken by the father do not affect the sperm in a way that would harm the embryo. The critical period for teratogenic effects (causing malformations) typically relates to the mother's exposure to harmful substances during pregnancy, particularly in the first trimester when organogenesis occurs.

4. General Considerations: While the medications your husband has taken are not expected to affect the pregnancy, it is always a good practice for both partners to discuss any medications or health concerns with their healthcare provider when planning for a family. This ensures that both partners are in optimal health and that any potential risks are adequately managed.

In conclusion, based on the information provided, your husband's use of terbinafine and the hepatitis B vaccination should not negatively impact your pregnancy. It is always advisable to maintain open communication with your healthcare provider throughout your pregnancy for personalized advice and to address any concerns you may have. Regular prenatal care will help ensure the health and well-being of both you and your baby. Congratulations on your pregnancy, and best wishes for a healthy journey ahead!
