Non-pregnant breast milk secretion?

Hello Doctor: I would like to ask a question.
My last menstrual cycle started on May 30, and today is June 15.
I have been taking daily contraceptive pills for a long time, and last night I noticed that my breasts are secreting milk.
Should I go to the hospital for an examination? What could this issue be? This has never happened before, and of course, it does not discharge naturally unless I squeeze it.
Thank you for your response! Best regards, Vita 6/15.

Vita, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2010/06/15

Breast milk discharge, especially when it occurs unexpectedly and outside of the context of pregnancy or breastfeeding, can be concerning and warrants further investigation. In your case, since you have been taking daily contraceptive pills and have recently experienced this discharge, it is essential to consider several factors that could contribute to this phenomenon.

Firstly, hormonal imbalances are a common cause of unexpected breast discharge. The hormones estrogen and progesterone, which are regulated by your contraceptive pills, can influence breast tissue and milk production. If there is an alteration in your hormone levels, it could lead to galactorrhea, which is the term used for the inappropriate discharge of milk from the breast. This condition can occur even in individuals who are not pregnant or breastfeeding.

Another potential cause of breast discharge is the presence of a prolactinoma, a benign tumor of the pituitary gland that produces excess prolactin, the hormone responsible for milk production. Elevated prolactin levels can lead to galactorrhea and may also cause menstrual irregularities, which you mentioned you have been experiencing. It is crucial to rule out this condition, especially if the discharge continues or is accompanied by other symptoms such as headaches or vision changes.

In addition to hormonal issues, other factors such as stress, certain medications, and even physical stimulation of the breast can lead to discharge. Since you are on contraceptive pills, it is also worth considering whether any recent changes in your medication or lifestyle could have impacted your hormone levels.

Given that this is a new symptom for you, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare provider. They may recommend a few diagnostic tests, including blood tests to check hormone levels (such as prolactin, estrogen, and progesterone) and possibly imaging studies like a breast ultrasound or MRI of the pituitary gland if necessary. These tests can help determine the underlying cause of the discharge and guide appropriate treatment.

In summary, while unexpected breast milk discharge can be benign, it is essential to take it seriously, especially since it is a new occurrence for you. Consulting with a healthcare professional will provide you with the necessary guidance and reassurance. They can help you understand the potential causes and decide on the best course of action based on your individual health history and current symptoms. Remember, early intervention is key in addressing any underlying issues effectively.
