Why do gums hurt?
Why does the gum between my second molar and first molar hurt? The outer gum of the second molar also hurts a little; could it be related to the pain in the middle gum? However, the inner gum does not hurt, only when I brush my teeth does it hurt, and the other areas are completely pain-free.
I have seen a doctor who said it is because my mouth space is too small and my teeth have not fully developed.
But I am already 19 years old! When I went to the doctor, he also performed a dental cleaning, but it has been a while and it still hurts.
Why is this happening? Thank you!

Hello, Miss: Thank you for your question.
Here is the response to your inquiry: Pain in the gums between the second and first molars indicates inflammation or infection of the gums, most likely due to the accumulation of dental plaque in the gingival sulcus, leading to bacterial infection.
If the teeth are misaligned, it can be difficult to thoroughly clean the gum areas between the teeth, which increases the risk of infection.
It is recommended to maintain good oral hygiene by effectively removing dental plaque, which will help resolve the inflammation.
Wishing you peace and happiness.

More Info
Gum pain between molars can be a common issue, and understanding its causes and potential solutions is essential for effective management. Based on your description, it seems that you are experiencing discomfort in the gums between your second and first molars, as well as some pain on the outer side of the second molar. This situation can arise from several factors, and I will outline these below, along with possible solutions.
Causes of Gum Pain Between Molars
1. Gingivitis: One of the most common causes of gum pain is gingivitis, an inflammation of the gums often caused by plaque buildup. If plaque is not adequately removed through brushing and flossing, it can irritate the gum tissue, leading to pain, swelling, and bleeding.
2. Periodontal Disease: If gingivitis is left untreated, it can progress to periodontal disease, which affects the supporting structures of the teeth. This condition can cause more severe gum pain and may lead to tooth loss if not addressed.
3. Impacted Teeth: If your dental arch is small, as your dentist suggested, it may lead to impacted teeth, especially if your molars are not fully erupted. This can cause pressure and pain in the surrounding gum tissue.
4. Cavities or Tooth Decay: Decay in the molars can also lead to gum pain. If a cavity is present, it can irritate the gums and cause localized pain.
5. Food Particles: Sometimes, food particles can become trapped between teeth, leading to irritation and pain in the gums. This is particularly common if there are gaps or misalignments in your teeth.
6. Brushing Technique: If you are brushing too hard or using a hard-bristled toothbrush, it can cause gum irritation and pain.
Solutions for Gum Pain
1. Improved Oral Hygiene: Ensure that you are brushing your teeth at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and flossing daily. This will help remove plaque and food particles that can contribute to gum pain.
2. Regular Dental Check-ups: Since you have already seen a dentist, it is crucial to maintain regular check-ups. If your pain persists, consider returning to your dentist for further evaluation. They may recommend a deep cleaning or scaling if plaque and tartar buildup is significant.
3. Use of Antiseptic Mouthwash: An antiseptic mouthwash can help reduce bacteria in the mouth and may alleviate some of the inflammation and pain in your gums.
4. Warm Salt Water Rinse: Rinsing your mouth with warm salt water can help soothe inflamed gums and promote healing.
5. Pain Relief: Over-the-counter pain relievers, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, can help manage pain and inflammation. However, consult with a healthcare provider before starting any medication.
6. Dietary Adjustments: Avoiding overly hard or sticky foods can help prevent further irritation to your gums. Soft foods may be easier to manage while you are experiencing pain.
7. Orthodontic Consultation: If your dentist has indicated that your small mouth space is contributing to your dental issues, you might benefit from consulting an orthodontist. They can evaluate whether braces or other orthodontic treatments could help align your teeth better and alleviate some of the pressure on your gums.
Conclusion
Gum pain between molars can stem from various causes, including gingivitis, periodontal disease, impacted teeth, and more. It is essential to maintain good oral hygiene and seek regular dental care to address these issues. If your pain persists despite these measures, further evaluation by a dental professional is warranted to explore more specific treatments tailored to your situation. Remember, early intervention can prevent more severe dental problems in the future.
