Regarding wounds of the gums..?
Previously, the inner gums of my lower teeth felt bumpy and rough.
I visited the dentist and an ENT specialist three times, and each time they said it was caused by friction from eating or brushing.
Recently, I kept touching it with my hand, which led to some skin breaking and pain.
I went to see a doctor again, who said it was just a minor inflammation and advised me not to touch it with my hands or tongue.
It seems to have improved, but now I feel itchy when I drink cold water.
What could this be?

Hello: It sounds like there's no need to worry too much; it may just be a slight abnormality during the wound healing process, and it should improve after some time.

Gum irritation can be a common issue that many people experience, and it can arise from various causes. Understanding the underlying reasons, symptoms, and potential remedies can help manage this condition effectively.
Causes of Gum Irritation
1. Mechanical Trauma: As you mentioned, irritation can occur due to friction from eating or brushing. If you are brushing too hard or using a toothbrush with hard bristles, it can lead to gum irritation. Additionally, food particles can get lodged in the gums, causing inflammation.
2. Gingivitis: This is an early stage of gum disease characterized by inflammation of the gums. It is often caused by plaque buildup due to poor oral hygiene. Symptoms include redness, swelling, and bleeding of the gums, especially when brushing or flossing.
3. Allergic Reactions: Sometimes, certain foods, dental products, or even medications can cause allergic reactions that lead to gum irritation. If you notice that your gums become itchy or inflamed after consuming specific foods or using certain dental products, this may be the cause.
4. Infections: Bacterial infections can lead to gum irritation and pain. Conditions like periodontitis, which is a more severe form of gum disease, can cause significant discomfort and require professional treatment.
5. Hormonal Changes: Hormonal fluctuations, such as those occurring during menstruation, pregnancy, or menopause, can make gums more sensitive and prone to irritation.
Symptoms of Gum Irritation
The symptoms you described, such as roughness and tenderness in the gums, are typical of gum irritation. Other common symptoms include:
- Swelling and redness of the gums
- Bleeding when brushing or flossing
- Pain or discomfort, especially when consuming hot or cold foods and beverages
- Itching or a burning sensation in the gums
Remedies for Gum Irritation
1. Good Oral Hygiene: Maintaining a proper oral hygiene routine is crucial. Brush your teeth at least twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Floss daily to remove food particles and plaque from between your teeth.
2. Saltwater Rinse: Rinsing your mouth with warm saltwater can help reduce inflammation and promote healing. Mix about half a teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water and swish it around your mouth for 30 seconds before spitting it out.
3. Avoid Irritants: If you suspect that certain foods or dental products are causing your gum irritation, try to avoid them. This includes spicy foods, acidic foods, or products containing strong flavors or fragrances.
4. Stay Hydrated: Drinking plenty of water can help keep your mouth moist and wash away food particles and bacteria.
5. Consult a Dentist: If your symptoms persist or worsen, it’s essential to consult a dentist. They can provide a thorough examination and may recommend treatments such as professional cleaning, medicated mouth rinses, or other interventions.
Conclusion
In your case, the roughness and irritation of your gums, along with the pain when consuming cold beverages, suggest that you may be experiencing a mild form of gum inflammation. It’s good to hear that the condition seems to be improving, but it’s essential to be cautious and avoid further irritation. If the itching persists or if you notice any new symptoms, returning to your dentist for further evaluation would be wise. They can help determine if there is an underlying issue that needs to be addressed, such as gingivitis or an allergic reaction. Remember, maintaining good oral hygiene and being mindful of what you consume can significantly contribute to your gum health.
