Can masturbation cause genital warts?
Hello doctor, I seem to have phimosis, which prevents me from retracting my foreskin completely.
Recently, I've been masturbating quite frequently, about every two days.
Sometimes, I wrap my glans with tissue paper while masturbating.
A few days ago, while showering, I pulled my foreskin back as far as it could go and noticed a few small bumps at the opening, about the size of acne, scattered in that area.
They are not visible unless I retract the foreskin.
I'm very worried that it might be genital warts.
I should mention that I have never had sexual intercourse, only masturbation.
Sometimes, I find it troublesome, so I just use tissue paper to wipe without rinsing, and there have been a few instances where my fingers accidentally touched the opening while masturbating.
I'm really concerned about the possibility of bacterial or viral infections leading to genital warts or other sexually transmitted infections.
Please help me with your advice.
Thank you!

Hello, normal masturbation will not cause genital warts; however, if there is the HPV (human papillomavirus) on your hands, it is possible to contract it.
Therefore, it is recommended to thoroughly wash your hands, penis, and other areas before masturbation.
Note: There have been records of HPV transmission through mouse devices in internet cafes in the country.
If you have any further questions or need clarification, feel free to ask, and we can discuss and research together.

Masturbation itself does not directly lead to genital warts, which are caused by certain strains of the human papillomavirus (HPV). However, understanding the risks associated with sexual health and hygiene is essential, especially in your situation where you have concerns about genital warts and potential infections.
Genital warts are a common sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by HPV, particularly by types 6 and 11. These warts can appear as small, flesh-colored or gray swellings in the genital area. They can also appear as small bumps or groups of bumps that resemble cauliflower. It’s important to note that HPV can be transmitted through skin-to-skin contact, which means that even without penetrative sexual intercourse, you can still be at risk if you come into contact with an infected area.
In your case, you mentioned that you have not engaged in sexual intercourse but have been frequently masturbating. The concern about the small bumps you observed at the opening of your foreskin is valid. While these bumps could be benign (such as pearly penile papules or Fordyce spots), they could also be indicative of an infection, including HPV. The fact that you have not had sexual contact does reduce the likelihood of contracting HPV, but it does not eliminate the risk entirely, especially if there has been any contact with infected surfaces or bodily fluids.
Here are some important considerations and recommendations for your situation:
1. Hygiene: It is crucial to maintain good hygiene, especially when engaging in masturbation. Using clean hands and ensuring that any materials (like tissues) are clean can help reduce the risk of introducing bacteria or viruses to the genital area.
2. Examine the Bumps: If the bumps you observed persist or change in appearance, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional. A doctor can perform a physical examination and may recommend further testing to determine the nature of these bumps.
3. Avoid Irritation: If you are experiencing discomfort due to your foreskin, consider discussing this with a healthcare provider. They can provide guidance on whether any treatment is necessary, such as circumcision or other options to alleviate the issue.
4. Education on STIs: Understanding how STIs are transmitted can help you make informed decisions about your sexual health in the future. Even if you are not currently sexually active, being educated about safe practices is beneficial.
5. Vaccination: If you are concerned about HPV, consider discussing the HPV vaccine with your healthcare provider. The vaccine is effective in preventing the types of HPV that most commonly cause genital warts and certain cancers.
6. Mental Health: It’s normal to feel anxious about health concerns, especially regarding sexually transmitted infections. If you find that your worries are affecting your daily life, consider speaking with a mental health professional who can help you manage anxiety and provide support.
In summary, while masturbation itself does not cause genital warts, maintaining good hygiene and being aware of any changes in your genital area is essential. If you have concerns about the bumps you’ve noticed, seeking medical advice is the best course of action. A healthcare professional can provide you with accurate information, reassurance, and appropriate treatment if necessary.
