The skin may itch?
Hello doctor, for the past few days, every time it rains and my skin comes into contact with moisture, I start to itch and my hands and feet swell.
However, once I return indoors for a while, the itching and swelling subside.
I would like to ask what might be the cause of this?

Skin itching and swelling during rainy weather can be quite uncomfortable and may stem from several underlying causes. The symptoms you describe—itching and swelling upon contact with rain, followed by resolution after returning indoors—suggest a possible reaction to environmental factors, such as humidity, temperature changes, or even allergens present in the rain or the surrounding environment.
Possible Causes:
1. Environmental Allergens: Rain can stir up pollen, mold spores, and other allergens that may be present in the air. If you have a sensitivity or allergy to these substances, exposure during rainy weather could trigger an allergic reaction, leading to symptoms such as itching and swelling.
2. Temperature and Humidity Changes: Rain often brings about a drop in temperature and an increase in humidity. For some individuals, these changes can lead to skin reactions. The skin may become more sensitive in humid conditions, leading to conditions like contact dermatitis, which can cause redness, swelling, and itching.
3. Aquagenic Urticaria: This is a rare condition where the skin reacts to water, regardless of its temperature. Symptoms typically include hives or welts that appear after contact with water. If your symptoms are consistent with this condition, it may be worth discussing with a dermatologist.
4. Cholinergic Urticaria: This type of urticaria is triggered by sweating, heat, or exercise. If the rain causes you to sweat or if you feel warmer after being outside, this could potentially trigger an episode.
5. Skin Sensitivity: Some individuals have skin that is more reactive to environmental changes. The moisture from the rain could exacerbate this sensitivity, leading to temporary swelling and itching.
Solutions and Management:
1. Avoidance: If you notice that your symptoms worsen during rain, try to minimize exposure. Stay indoors during heavy rain or use protective clothing to limit skin contact with rainwater.
2. Moisturization: Keeping your skin well-moisturized can help reduce irritation. Use a fragrance-free moisturizer after bathing or exposure to rain to help maintain the skin barrier.
3. Antihistamines: Over-the-counter antihistamines can help alleviate itching and swelling associated with allergic reactions. If your symptoms are severe or persistent, consult a healthcare provider for appropriate medication.
4. Cool Compresses: Applying a cool, damp cloth to the affected areas can provide relief from itching and reduce swelling.
5. Consult a Dermatologist: If your symptoms persist or worsen, it is advisable to see a dermatologist. They can perform a thorough evaluation, possibly including allergy testing or skin biopsies, to determine the exact cause of your symptoms and recommend appropriate treatments.
6. Lifestyle Adjustments: Consider keeping a diary of your symptoms in relation to weather conditions, activities, and any products you use on your skin. This can help identify potential triggers and guide your management strategy.
In summary, while the symptoms you are experiencing during rainy weather can be bothersome, understanding the potential causes and implementing appropriate management strategies can help alleviate discomfort. If symptoms persist, seeking professional medical advice is crucial to ensure proper diagnosis and treatment.
