Itching skin at night?

Recently, my skin has been itching every night, to the point where I can't sleep.
If I scratch, large welts appear on my limbs and body, or small bumps on my fingers and the tops of my feet.
At first, my face and neck weren't itchy, but in the last 1-2 days, they have started to itch as well.
Now, my face, legs, back, and neck are all itchy.
What could be the cause, doctor?

Nighttime itching can be a frustrating and distressing experience, significantly impacting sleep quality and overall well-being. The symptoms you've described—intense itching that leads to raised welts or hives on various parts of your body—suggest a few potential underlying causes.
One common cause of nighttime itching is urticaria, commonly known as hives. This condition can be triggered by various factors, including allergens, stress, temperature changes, or even certain medications. The fact that your itching intensifies at night could be related to several factors, such as increased body temperature or the relaxation of your body, which may heighten your awareness of itching sensations. Urticaria typically presents as raised, itchy welts that can appear and disappear quickly, often resolving within a few hours.

Another possibility is eczema or atopic dermatitis, which can also cause intense itching, especially in dry conditions or during colder months. Eczema often presents with dry, inflamed skin and can be exacerbated by irritants or allergens in your environment. If you notice that your skin is particularly dry or if you have a history of eczema, this could be a contributing factor.

Contact dermatitis is another potential cause, where your skin reacts to something it has come into contact with, such as soaps, detergents, or fabrics. If you've recently changed any products you use on your skin or laundry, this could be worth considering.

Environmental factors can also play a significant role. For instance, dry air, especially during winter months, can lead to skin dryness and irritation, resulting in itching. Additionally, if you have recently changed your living environment or work conditions, exposure to new allergens or irritants could be a factor.

To address your nighttime itching, consider the following solutions:
1. Moisturize Regularly: Use a fragrance-free moisturizer to keep your skin hydrated, especially after bathing. This can help alleviate dryness that may be contributing to your itching.

2. Cool Baths: Taking a cool bath or shower can help soothe itchy skin. Avoid hot water, as it can further dry out your skin.

3. Avoid Scratching: While it may be tempting to scratch, doing so can worsen the irritation and lead to skin damage or infection. Instead, try applying a cold compress to the affected areas.

4. Over-the-Counter Antihistamines: Medications like diphenhydramine (Benadryl) or cetirizine (Zyrtec) can help reduce itching, especially if it is related to an allergic reaction. However, consult with a healthcare provider before starting any medication.

5. Identify Triggers: Keep a diary of your symptoms to identify potential triggers. Note any changes in your environment, diet, or products used on your skin.

6. Consult a Dermatologist: If your symptoms persist or worsen, it is essential to seek professional medical advice. A dermatologist can provide a proper diagnosis and recommend appropriate treatments, which may include prescription medications or topical treatments.

In conclusion, nighttime itching can stem from various causes, including urticaria, eczema, contact dermatitis, or environmental factors. By implementing some of the suggested solutions and consulting with a healthcare professional, you can work towards alleviating your symptoms and improving your sleep quality. Remember, it’s crucial to avoid self-diagnosing and to seek professional guidance for persistent or severe symptoms.
