Should I see a dermatologist?

Hello, Doctor! I have developed a tumor on my back that has recently increased in size and has become quite painful.
A few years ago, it was only the size of a five-dollar coin, but last year and this year it grew to the size of a ten-dollar coin, and in the last week or two, it has grown to the size of an egg.
It didn't hurt before, but now it is very painful to touch, and even without touching it, I feel a sharp pain.
I believe this might be inflammation.
Recently, I also noticed that the tumor seems to be discharging a yellowish fluid with an odor.
Today, I visited a neurosurgeon, who said it is an inflamed abscess and that this is not his specialty.
He recommended that I see a general surgeon, but I missed the appointment time.
After returning home, I researched online and compared many symptoms, and I wonder if this could be an epidermoid cyst.
Should I see a dermatologist since this seems to fall under the skin category? Thank you!

Hello: You have reached a level that requires surgery, which is why it is recommended that you see a general surgeon, unless you find a dermatologist who performs surgeries.
Wishing you the best of luck.

It sounds like you are experiencing a concerning issue with a painful skin tumor that has recently increased in size and is now producing a yellow discharge with an odor. Given the symptoms you've described, it is indeed advisable to see a dermatologist as soon as possible.

From your description, the tumor has changed significantly in size from a small coin to the size of an egg, and it has become painful. The presence of inflammation, pain upon touch, and discharge are all red flags that warrant immediate medical attention. While it is possible that this could be a sebaceous cyst (also known as an epidermoid cyst), which is a common benign skin growth, the changes in size and the new symptoms suggest that it may be infected or inflamed.
Sebaceous cysts are typically harmless but can become problematic if they become infected. An infection can lead to increased pain, swelling, and the discharge of pus, which is likely what you are experiencing. The fact that a neurologist has already assessed the situation and recommended a general surgeon indicates that this is a serious enough condition to require further evaluation and possibly intervention.

A dermatologist specializes in skin conditions and will be able to provide a thorough examination of the tumor. They can determine whether it is indeed a sebaceous cyst or another type of skin lesion, such as a lipoma or even a more serious condition. If it is infected, they may need to drain it and prescribe antibiotics to treat the infection. If the cyst is causing significant discomfort or has the potential for complications, surgical removal may be necessary.

In addition to the immediate concern of the painful and inflamed tumor, it is also important to consider the long-term management of your skin health. Dermatologists can offer treatments and advice on how to care for your skin, especially if you have a history of skin issues. They can also provide guidance on preventive measures to avoid similar issues in the future.

In summary, based on the symptoms you have described, it is highly recommended that you see a dermatologist as soon as possible. They will be able to provide a proper diagnosis and treatment plan tailored to your specific situation. Do not delay in seeking care, as timely intervention can prevent further complications and alleviate your discomfort.
