Discomfort while wearing glasses?

Hello, I would like to ask about my father.
For the past couple of years, he has been feeling very uncomfortable wearing glasses.
He often uses pliers to adjust them himself.
He says that the optical shops do not provide the comfort he desires, and he quickly feels uncomfortable again.
As a result, he has broken more than ten pairs of glasses by himself.
Every day, he uses pliers to adjust them.
His discomfort includes headaches and discomfort in his nose bridge, which affects his mood and makes him irritable.
He has visited three ophthalmologists who either diagnosed him with retinal detachment or said there was no issue.
Although the retinal detachment has been treated, his condition remains the same.
He suspects there might be a nasal issue and recently underwent surgery, but he still feels uncomfortable wearing glasses.
A friend mentioned that there was a report on a Japanese program about similar symptoms, possibly called "diplopia" or something similar, but I couldn't find any related information.
I would like to ask the doctor for advice on which specialty my father should see next.
Could this be an eye problem caused by other health issues? We are all very worried since he adjusts his glasses daily and has already switched optical shops three times.
Thank you, doctor.

Hello, I think we should first confirm whether there are any other issues related to his headache and nasal symptoms.
If there are none, we can consider adjusting his glasses as a last resort.
Some people's glasses do require some time to adjust, so it might be a good idea to consult an optical shop with more experienced opticians for lens fitting.
Thank you.

It sounds like your father is experiencing significant discomfort with his glasses, which is understandably frustrating for both him and your family. The symptoms he describes—headaches, discomfort on the bridge of his nose, and irritability—can be indicative of several underlying issues related to vision and eyewear. Let's explore some potential causes and solutions.

Potential Causes of Discomfort with Glasses
1. Incorrect Prescription: One of the most common reasons for discomfort with glasses is an incorrect prescription. Even if he has seen multiple eye doctors, it’s possible that the prescription hasn’t been accurately determined or that his vision has changed since his last exam. It may be beneficial for him to have a comprehensive eye exam specifically focused on his current symptoms.

2. Poor Fit: Glasses that do not fit properly can cause discomfort. If the frames are too tight, they can press on the nose and temples, leading to headaches and discomfort. Conversely, if they are too loose, they may slide down the nose, causing him to adjust them frequently, which can be irritating. An optician can help adjust the frames for a better fit.

3. Lens Type: The type of lenses he is using may also contribute to his discomfort. For instance, if he has a high prescription, he may benefit from high-index lenses that are thinner and lighter. Additionally, if he is using bifocals or progressive lenses, it may take some time to adjust to the different focal areas, and improper fitting can exacerbate discomfort.

4. Visual Fatigue: If your father is spending long hours reading or using screens, he may be experiencing visual fatigue. This can lead to headaches and discomfort, especially if he is straining to see clearly. Regular breaks and the 20-20-20 rule (looking at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds every 20 minutes) can help alleviate this.

5. Underlying Health Issues: Conditions such as sinus problems or allergies can also cause discomfort around the eyes and nose. Since he has recently had nasal surgery, it might be worth discussing with his doctor whether this could be contributing to his symptoms.

6. Psychological Factors: Anxiety and stress can manifest physically, including in the form of headaches and discomfort. If he is feeling anxious about his vision or the discomfort itself, this could exacerbate his symptoms.

Recommendations for Solutions
1. Re-evaluation by an Eye Care Professional: It may be beneficial for your father to see a different optometrist or ophthalmologist for a fresh perspective. A comprehensive eye exam should include a thorough assessment of his prescription, eye health, and the fit of his glasses.

2. Frame Adjustment: Visiting an optician to have his frames adjusted for comfort is crucial. They can ensure that the glasses sit properly on his face and do not cause pressure points.

3. Consider Different Lens Options: If he hasn’t already, he might want to explore different types of lenses, such as anti-reflective coatings, blue light filtering, or even contact lenses if he is open to them.

4. Regular Breaks and Eye Care: Encourage him to take regular breaks from screens and reading. Simple eye exercises and ensuring proper lighting while reading can also help reduce strain.

5. Addressing Underlying Health Issues: If there are concerns about sinus issues or other health problems, it would be wise for him to follow up with his healthcare provider to rule out any underlying conditions.

6. Stress Management: If anxiety is a factor, exploring stress management techniques such as mindfulness, meditation, or even talking to a mental health professional could be beneficial.

Conclusion
Your father's discomfort with his glasses is a multifaceted issue that may require a combination of solutions. By addressing the fit of his glasses, ensuring his prescription is accurate, and considering any underlying health issues, he may find relief from his symptoms. It’s essential to approach this holistically, considering both the physical and psychological aspects of his discomfort. Encourage him to be proactive in seeking help and to communicate openly with his eye care professionals about his ongoing issues.
