Seeing letters shake or wobble?

Recently, I've been experiencing a sensation of the text on my computer and phone screen shaking from side to side.
I have undergone a retinal examination, and the doctor mentioned there are slight signs of degeneration but nothing serious.
What could be the reason for this? Thank you!

Mr. Zhang, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2010/12/27

Dr. Hu Yusheng reply Ophthalmology

It feels like the text is swaying left and right.
A retinal examination has been performed, and it is not a retinal issue.
It could possibly be due to vitreous degeneration or other problems.
Wishing you health and safety.

P.S.
Due to a disconnection with the Taiwan e-Hospital network, it was only repaired this afternoon, so I apologize for the delayed response!

More Info

Experiencing blurry text or a sensation of letters shaking while looking at screens can be quite distressing, especially for those who rely heavily on digital devices for work or study. Given your recent retinal examination, which indicated slight degeneration but no major issues, it’s essential to explore potential causes and solutions for your symptoms.

Possible Causes of Blurry Text and Eye Strain
1. Digital Eye Strain (DES): Prolonged use of computers and mobile devices can lead to digital eye strain, also known as computer vision syndrome. Symptoms include blurry vision, dry eyes, headaches, and discomfort. This condition arises from several factors, including prolonged screen time, poor lighting, and improper viewing distances.

2. Retinal Changes: While your doctor noted slight degeneration, even minor changes in the retina can affect how you perceive visual information. The retina is responsible for converting light into signals that the brain interprets as images. Any irregularities can lead to visual distortions, such as blurriness or wobbling text.

3. Refractive Errors: If you have uncorrected refractive errors (like myopia, hyperopia, or astigmatism), these can exacerbate visual discomfort when focusing on screens. Even if you have corrective lenses, changes in your vision can occur over time, necessitating an updated prescription.

4. Fatigue and Stress: Mental and physical fatigue can significantly impact your visual perception. Stress can lead to muscle tension around the eyes, contributing to discomfort and visual disturbances.

5. Lighting Conditions: Poor lighting can strain your eyes. Glare from screens or inadequate ambient lighting can cause your eyes to work harder, leading to fatigue and blurry vision.

Solutions to Alleviate Symptoms
1. Follow the 20-20-20 Rule: To reduce eye strain, take a break every 20 minutes by looking at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. This helps relax the eye muscles and reduces fatigue.

2. Adjust Your Workspace: Ensure that your computer screen is at eye level and about an arm's length away. Use proper lighting to minimize glare, and consider using an anti-glare screen protector.

3. Use Artificial Tears: If you experience dryness, consider using lubricating eye drops to keep your eyes moist. This can help alleviate discomfort associated with prolonged screen time.

4. Regular Eye Exams: Since you have experienced changes in your vision, it’s crucial to have regular eye examinations. Your eye care professional can monitor any changes in your retinal health and update your prescription as needed.

5. Limit Screen Time: If possible, reduce the amount of time spent on screens, especially during breaks or after work hours. Engage in activities that do not require visual concentration, such as walking or reading physical books.

6. Consider Blue Light Filters: Many devices now come with blue light filtering options, which can help reduce eye strain. You can also purchase blue light blocking glasses.

7. Stay Hydrated and Maintain a Healthy Diet: Proper hydration and nutrition can support overall eye health. Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins C and E, and zinc can be beneficial for your eyes.

Conclusion
While your recent retinal examination showed only slight degeneration, the symptoms you are experiencing could be attributed to digital eye strain or other factors. Implementing the above strategies can help alleviate discomfort and improve your visual experience. If symptoms persist or worsen, it’s essential to follow up with your eye care provider for further evaluation and management. Regular monitoring and proactive care are key to maintaining your eye health, especially in our increasingly digital world.
