Hello, Dr. Hu?
Hello, Dr.
Hu.
Here are my questions! Since the 31st of last year, I have been feeling unwell.
My throat feels uncomfortable and I have a persistent cough with phlegm that seems never-ending.
My body feels warm, but my hands and feet are cold.
I feel very fatigued and want to sleep.
I went to a clinic where I received an injection, but after finishing the medication, I still didn't feel better.
My throat has started to feel scratchy, and I can't stop coughing! I rushed to a second clinic, where I was given medication and a bottle of cough syrup, but I still haven't improved!
The main symptoms are:
1.
An itchy throat that makes me want to cough.
2.
Discomfort in my throat that leads to a constant urge to cough up phlegm (light green and thick).
3.
Excessive nasal discharge (light green and thick).
4.
There is crusting around my eyes!
These symptoms are particularly severe every morning! It has become a routine to clear the crust from my eyes, cough up the phlegm from my throat, and wipe away the nasal discharge as soon as I wake up! It’s really painful.
Doctor, am I really just suffering from a simple cold? My mother and brother are also coughing non-stop! The medication doesn’t seem to help them either!

Hello: In response to your question, based on your description of symptoms, you may have sinusitis and bronchitis.
However, a proper diagnosis can only be established through an examination by a specialist.
If necessary, antibiotic treatment may be required.

Persistent cough and throat discomfort can be quite distressing, especially when accompanied by other symptoms such as fatigue, cold extremities, and the production of colored mucus. Based on your description, it seems that you have been experiencing these symptoms for an extended period, and despite seeking medical attention and receiving treatment, you have not seen significant improvement.
Firstly, let's address the symptoms you are experiencing. A persistent cough, especially one that produces phlegm, can be indicative of several underlying conditions. The presence of thick, colored mucus (such as green) often suggests a bacterial infection, such as bronchitis or sinusitis, rather than a simple viral cold. In cases of viral infections, mucus is typically clear or white. The fact that you also have throat discomfort and nasal congestion further supports the possibility of an upper respiratory infection.
Your symptoms of fatigue and cold extremities could be related to your body fighting off an infection. When the body is under stress from illness, it can divert blood flow to vital organs, which may leave the extremities feeling cold. However, if you are experiencing significant fatigue, it is essential to consider other factors, such as dehydration or even the possibility of a more systemic infection.
The presence of eye discharge (often referred to as "eye gunk" or crusting) can indicate an associated conjunctivitis, which may be viral or bacterial in nature. This could explain why your family members are also experiencing similar symptoms, suggesting a contagious process at play.
Given that you have already sought medical attention twice and have not found relief, it may be beneficial to revisit a healthcare provider for a more thorough evaluation. This could include a physical examination, a review of your medical history, and possibly further diagnostic tests such as a chest X-ray or a sputum culture to identify any bacterial pathogens.
In terms of treatment, if a bacterial infection is confirmed, antibiotics may be necessary. If the cough is due to post-nasal drip (mucus dripping down the back of the throat), antihistamines or nasal corticosteroids could help alleviate symptoms. Additionally, staying well-hydrated, using a humidifier, and practicing good throat care (such as warm saltwater gargles) can provide symptomatic relief.
It is also important to monitor your symptoms closely. If you experience any worsening of your condition, such as difficulty breathing, high fever, or chest pain, seek immediate medical attention.
In conclusion, while your symptoms may initially appear to be a simple cold, the persistence and nature of your symptoms suggest that a more thorough evaluation is warranted. It is crucial to address not only the cough and throat discomfort but also the overall systemic symptoms you are experiencing. Don't hesitate to advocate for your health and seek further medical advice until you find relief.
