Pregnancy
Hello, doctor.
I would like to ask: My last menstrual period was on November 13.
I went to the obstetrics and gynecology department on December 26 and confirmed that I was 6 weeks pregnant.
On January 9, during my second prenatal check-up, the fetus was normal and had a heartbeat.
Now I am 8 weeks and 5 days along.
However, I suddenly remembered that I had a small glass of red wine during a gathering with friends on the evening of December 23, as I had no idea I was pregnant at that time.
I didn't think to ask my obstetrician about this during my appointment, and now I am feeling very anxious.
Will this affect the fetus? Thank you!
Weiwei An, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2011/01/13
Dr. Lü Lizheng reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
Dear Vivian: Hello, a small glass of red wine contains a low alcohol content and should not have a significant impact, so please do not worry too much.
Wishing you peace and health.
Sincerely, Dr.
Lu Li-Cheng, Director of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Taoyuan General Hospital, Ministry of Health and Welfare.

It’s completely understandable to have concerns about alcohol consumption during early pregnancy, especially when you realize that you may have ingested alcohol before knowing you were pregnant. Let's break down the situation based on current medical knowledge and guidelines.
First, it's important to note that the critical period for fetal development is during the first trimester, which includes the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. During this time, the embryo is highly sensitive to various environmental factors, including alcohol. However, the effects of alcohol on the developing fetus can vary significantly depending on several factors, including the amount consumed, the timing of consumption, and individual susceptibility.
In your case, you mentioned consuming a small amount of red wine on December 23, while you were not yet aware of your pregnancy. By the time you confirmed your pregnancy on December 26, you were already about six weeks along. At this early stage, the embryo is still in the process of implantation and early development. Research indicates that occasional, low-level alcohol exposure during this time may not necessarily lead to significant harm. However, it is crucial to emphasize that there is no known safe amount of alcohol during pregnancy, and the best practice is to avoid alcohol entirely once pregnancy is confirmed.
The concern with alcohol consumption during pregnancy primarily revolves around the risk of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD), which can occur with heavy and chronic alcohol use. These disorders can lead to a range of physical, behavioral, and learning problems in children. However, isolated incidents of low alcohol consumption, particularly early in pregnancy, are less likely to result in these severe outcomes.
Given that you have already had two ultrasounds confirming a normal fetal heartbeat and development, this is a positive sign. Regular prenatal care is essential, and it’s good that you are monitoring your pregnancy closely. If you have ongoing concerns, it’s advisable to discuss them with your healthcare provider. They can provide personalized guidance and reassurance based on your specific situation.
In addition to discussing alcohol consumption, it’s also beneficial to focus on maintaining a healthy lifestyle during your pregnancy. This includes eating a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins, staying hydrated, and avoiding harmful substances. Prenatal vitamins, particularly those containing folic acid, are also recommended to support fetal development.
In summary, while it’s natural to worry about past alcohol consumption, especially in the early weeks of pregnancy, the evidence suggests that a single, small amount of alcohol is unlikely to cause significant harm. However, it’s crucial to avoid alcohol moving forward and to maintain open communication with your healthcare provider for the best outcomes for you and your baby. Remember, prenatal care is vital, and your healthcare team is there to support you throughout your pregnancy journey.
