Concerns about unprotected intercourse two days after menstruation?

Hello doctor, I have a question.
I got my period on November 13th and it ended on the 19th.
My December period started on December 17th and lasted for five days.
This month, my period started on January 17th and also lasted for five days.
On the 23rd, I had intercourse with my boyfriend, and he ejaculated inside me twice.
I'm worried about the possibility of pregnancy.
Although he says it won't happen, I know I should protect myself properly, but I gave in to momentary pleasure.
Can you please help me with this? Thank you.

Zi, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2011/01/24

Dr. Dong Yuhong reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Hello: If your ovulation and menstruation this month are consistent with your past patterns, the likelihood of pregnancy from this sexual activity is low.
However, if there are any abnormalities in your menstrual cycle, it is still advisable to seek medical evaluation.
Thank you.

It's understandable to have concerns about the possibility of pregnancy after intercourse, especially when it occurs shortly after your menstrual period. Let's break down the situation based on your menstrual cycle and the timing of intercourse.

Typically, a menstrual cycle lasts about 28 days, but it can vary from person to person. Ovulation usually occurs around 14 days before the start of your next period. In your case, you mentioned that your last period started on January 17 and lasted for five days. If we assume a regular cycle, ovulation would likely occur around January 31, which means that the fertile window would be approximately from January 26 to February 1.
Having intercourse on January 23, which is just a few days before your expected ovulation, does put you within the range where pregnancy could occur. Sperm can live inside the female reproductive tract for up to five days, so if you ovulate shortly after January 23, there is a possibility that sperm could fertilize an egg.

However, it's also important to consider that if your cycles are irregular or if you have any underlying health conditions affecting your menstrual cycle, this could alter the timing of ovulation. If you are concerned about the possibility of pregnancy, the best course of action would be to wait until your next expected period and take a home pregnancy test if your period is late.
In terms of contraception, it's always advisable to use protection if you wish to avoid unintended pregnancy. Condoms, birth control pills, and other forms of contraception can help prevent pregnancy and also protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

If you find yourself frequently worried about pregnancy or if you have questions about your menstrual cycle and fertility, it may be beneficial to consult with a healthcare provider. They can provide personalized advice based on your health history and help you explore contraceptive options that suit your lifestyle.

In summary, while there is a possibility of pregnancy from intercourse shortly after your period, it largely depends on your individual cycle and timing of ovulation. If you have concerns, monitoring your cycle and using contraception in the future can help alleviate anxiety and ensure that you are taking the necessary steps to protect your reproductive health.
