Throat issues
For the past 1 to 2 days, I have had a sore throat with phlegm and a persistent urge to cough.
After visiting a small clinic and taking medication, the pain has subsided, but my throat still feels swollen, and I have a sensation of something foreign when swallowing saliva.
Breathing in cold air triggers the urge to cough.
When I looked in the mirror, I noticed what appeared to be small red spots in my throat.

More Info
When it comes to throat issues, understanding the underlying causes, symptoms, and potential treatments is crucial for effective management. Based on your description, it seems you experienced a sore throat accompanied by phlegm and a sensation of something being stuck in your throat. This can be quite uncomfortable and may lead to further complications if not addressed properly.
Causes of Throat Issues
1. Infections: The most common cause of a sore throat is an infection, which can be viral (like the common cold or flu) or bacterial (such as strep throat). Viral infections often resolve on their own, while bacterial infections may require antibiotics.
2. Allergies: Allergic reactions to pollen, dust, or pet dander can cause throat irritation and swelling. This is often accompanied by other symptoms like sneezing, runny nose, or itchy eyes.
3. Environmental Factors: Exposure to dry air, especially in winter months, can lead to throat discomfort. Additionally, smoking or exposure to secondhand smoke can irritate the throat.
4. Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD): Acid reflux can cause stomach acid to back up into the throat, leading to irritation and a sensation of a lump in the throat.
5. Other Medical Conditions: Conditions such as tonsillitis, laryngitis, or even more serious issues like tumors can also cause throat discomfort.
Symptoms
The symptoms you described—sore throat, phlegm, a feeling of swelling, and the presence of red spots—are indicative of inflammation in the throat. The red spots you observed could be a sign of irritation or infection, such as tonsillitis or pharyngitis. The sensation of an obstruction when swallowing is also common in cases of throat inflammation.
Treatments
1. Home Remedies:
- Hydration: Drinking plenty of fluids helps keep the throat moist and can alleviate discomfort.
- Gargling Salt Water: This can reduce swelling and kill bacteria.
- Humidifiers: Using a humidifier can add moisture to the air, which may help soothe a dry or scratchy throat.
2. Over-the-Counter Medications:
- Pain Relievers: Non-prescription medications like ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help reduce pain and inflammation.
- Throat Lozenges: These can provide temporary relief by soothing the throat.
3. Prescription Medications: If a bacterial infection is suspected, a healthcare provider may prescribe antibiotics. It’s essential to complete the full course of antibiotics even if symptoms improve.
4. Avoid Irritants: Steering clear of smoke, strong odors, and other irritants can help prevent further irritation of the throat.
5. Consult a Specialist: If symptoms persist or worsen, it’s advisable to see an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist. They can perform a thorough examination and may recommend further tests, such as a throat culture or imaging studies, to determine the exact cause of your symptoms.
Conclusion
In summary, throat issues can arise from various causes, and understanding these can help in managing symptoms effectively. Given your experience of a sore throat with phlegm and the sensation of swelling, it’s important to monitor your symptoms closely. If they persist or worsen, seeking medical advice is crucial to rule out any serious conditions and to receive appropriate treatment. Remember, early intervention often leads to better outcomes, so don’t hesitate to reach out to a healthcare professional if needed.
