Abdominal pain and diarrhea?

Hello, doctor.
A few days ago, I had a fever along with abdominal pain and diarrhea, so I visited an ENT specialist who prescribed gastrointestinal medication.
However, while my cold is almost completely resolved, my abdominal issues have not improved.
My stools are watery and break apart like seaweed soup in the toilet, and I also have pain and cramping below my navel.
This has been going on for two days, and I am having about 10 bowel movements a day.
Even when I am not having a bowel movement, my abdomen continues to cramp.
What could be the problem? Thank you!

A Guo, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2011/03/06

More Info

Abdominal pain and diarrhea can be symptoms of a variety of underlying conditions, and understanding the potential causes is crucial for effective treatment. Based on your description, it seems that you have been experiencing significant discomfort, including fever, abdominal pain, and frequent watery stools. These symptoms can be indicative of several gastrointestinal issues, and it’s essential to consider both infectious and non-infectious causes.

Possible Causes
1. Gastroenteritis: This is one of the most common causes of abdominal pain and diarrhea, often resulting from viral or bacterial infections. Symptoms typically include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal cramps. If you had a fever, it could suggest a viral infection like norovirus or a bacterial infection such as Salmonella or E. coli.

2. Food Poisoning: Consuming contaminated food can lead to foodborne illnesses, which often present with similar symptoms. If you recently ate something suspicious, this could be a likely cause.

3. Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS): If you have a history of gastrointestinal issues, IBS could be a possibility. It is characterized by abdominal pain and changes in bowel habits, including diarrhea.

4. Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD): Conditions like Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis can cause chronic abdominal pain and diarrhea. These conditions often require more extensive evaluation and management.

5. Diverticulitis: Inflammation of diverticula in the colon can lead to abdominal pain and changes in bowel habits, including diarrhea.

6. Intestinal Obstruction: Although less common, an obstruction can cause severe abdominal pain and changes in bowel movements. This is usually accompanied by other symptoms like vomiting.

When to Seek Medical Attention
Given that your symptoms have persisted for two days with frequent diarrhea and significant abdominal pain, it is advisable to seek medical attention if you haven't already. Here are some signs that warrant immediate medical evaluation:
- Severe abdominal pain that does not improve
- Signs of dehydration (such as excessive thirst, dry mouth, or decreased urination)
- Blood in your stool or black, tarry stools
- Persistent fever (especially if it exceeds 101°F or 38.3°C)
- Vomiting that prevents you from keeping fluids down

Diagnostic Tests
Your healthcare provider may recommend several tests to determine the cause of your symptoms, including:
- Stool Tests: To check for infections, parasites, or blood.

- Blood Tests: To assess for signs of infection or inflammation.

- Imaging Studies: Such as an abdominal ultrasound or CT scan, to visualize the organs and identify any abnormalities.

Treatment Options
Treatment will depend on the underlying cause of your symptoms. For viral gastroenteritis, supportive care is often sufficient, including hydration and rest. If a bacterial infection is identified, antibiotics may be necessary. For conditions like IBS or IBD, dietary changes and medications may be recommended.

Conclusion
In summary, abdominal pain and diarrhea can arise from various causes, ranging from infections to chronic gastrointestinal disorders. Given the persistence of your symptoms, it is crucial to consult with a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation and appropriate management. Remember to stay hydrated and monitor your symptoms closely, as timely intervention can significantly improve your condition.
