Hair growth in the urethra?

Hello, doctor.
When I was younger, I had surgery for a hypospadias.
I have noticed that there are hairs growing inside my urethra, and there are white crystals on the hairs.
I wonder if this is the reason I frequently experienced urinary tract infections in the past.
I once tried to remove one of the hairs myself, and it was extremely painful.
Now it seems there are still one or two hairs left, but they are too short to pull out.
Is there any problem with attempting to remove them myself? Additionally, I occasionally feel a stinging sensation in my urethra, which is different from the typical pain associated with a urinary tract infection.
It feels like a thin line is constricting my urethra, which I have never experienced before.
Is this related to the hairs in my urethra, or could there be another cause?

Hello, hypospadias.
After surgery, the usual method involves using a flap of the foreskin as the urethral lining.
Sometimes, there may be hair growth, which occurs because there are hair follicles on the foreskin.
If the hair is visible externally, we can use a very fine specialized electrocautery tip to destroy the hair follicles, providing a permanent solution.
If complete removal is not possible or if the follicles are located deeper, there are a few considerations: 1.
Conservative treatment, which involves increasing fluid intake to reduce the risk of infection.
2.
Endoscopic examination to attempt removal as much as possible.

Understanding hair growth in unusual areas, such as the urethra, can be quite concerning and warrants a thorough examination. The presence of hair in the urethra is not typical and can be attributed to several factors, including previous surgical interventions, such as the one you mentioned for hypospadias. Surgical procedures can sometimes lead to abnormal tissue growth or changes in the surrounding areas, which might explain the hair growth you are experiencing.

The white crystalline substance you observed on the hair could potentially be keratin, a protein that is a key component of hair, skin, and nails. It is also possible that it could be a buildup of other substances, such as urine crystals or debris, which can occur in the urethra. If you have a history of urinary tract infections (UTIs), this could also contribute to changes in the urethral environment, leading to unusual symptoms.

Regarding the pain you described, it is essential to differentiate between various types of discomfort. The sensation of a "tight string" around the urethra could be due to several reasons, including inflammation, irritation, or even the presence of foreign bodies, such as hair. If the hair is embedded or causing irritation, it could lead to localized pain or discomfort. Self-removal of hair from the urethra is not advisable, as it can lead to injury, infection, or further complications. The urethra is a sensitive structure, and any trauma can exacerbate existing issues or introduce new problems.

If you are experiencing persistent pain or discomfort, it is crucial to seek medical attention. A healthcare professional can perform a thorough examination, possibly including imaging studies or a cystoscopy, to visualize the urethra and determine the underlying cause of your symptoms. They can also assess the hair growth and any associated issues, such as inflammation or infection.

In terms of treatment, if the hair is causing significant discomfort or complications, a urologist may recommend its removal in a controlled and sterile environment. Additionally, if there are signs of infection or inflammation, appropriate medical treatment, such as antibiotics or anti-inflammatory medications, may be necessary.

In summary, while hair growth in the urethra is unusual and can be linked to previous surgical procedures, it is essential to approach this issue with caution. Self-removal of hair is not recommended due to the risk of complications. Instead, consulting with a healthcare provider will ensure that you receive the appropriate evaluation and treatment for your symptoms. Your health and comfort are paramount, and addressing these concerns with a professional will provide you with the best course of action.
