Sinusitis
Hello, sometimes when I have a slight cold, my nose feels uncomfortable, and my eyes suddenly feel foggy.
My forehead also feels a bit swollen, and mainly, my face feels warm and hot, but I do not have a fever.
Could this be a symptom of sinusitis? I would like to know if sinusitis can cause these symptoms.
Please confirm if I might have sinusitis.
Thank you.

Dear Ms.
Liu,
Hello.
The symptoms of acute sinusitis can be categorized into primary and secondary symptoms.
The primary symptoms include: 1.
Facial pain or pressure 2.
Facial congestion or a feeling of fullness 3.
Nasal obstruction 4.
Purulent nasal discharge 5.
Decreased sense of smell.
The secondary symptoms may include: 1.
Cough 2.
Tooth pain 3.
Ear pressure 4.
Fatigue 5.
Fever 6.
Headache 7.
Halitosis.
Generally, if a patient exhibits two primary symptoms or one primary symptom along with two secondary symptoms, a diagnosis of acute sinusitis can be made.
Treatment typically involves a course of antibiotics for 10-14 days.
Based on your symptoms, they indeed align with the diagnosis of sinusitis.
If there is no improvement, it is advisable to seek medical attention for a detailed evaluation.
Wishing you safety and health.
Sincerely,
Dr.

Hello! Thank you for your question regarding sinusitis and its symptoms. Based on your description, it does sound like you may be experiencing symptoms consistent with sinusitis, also known as sinus infection or sinusitis.
Sinusitis occurs when the cavities around the nasal passages become inflamed or swollen, often due to an infection, allergies, or other factors. The symptoms of sinusitis can vary, but common signs include:
1. Facial Pain or Pressure: This is often felt around the forehead, cheeks, and eyes. You mentioned feeling a sense of pressure in your forehead and a sensation of heat in your face, which aligns with this symptom.
2. Nasal Congestion: A feeling of stuffiness or blockage in the nasal passages is typical. This can lead to difficulty breathing through the nose.
3. Discolored Nasal Discharge: While you did not mention this specifically, sinusitis often involves thick, yellow or green mucus.
4. Headaches: The pressure from inflamed sinuses can lead to headaches, particularly in the forehead area.
5. Reduced Sense of Smell or Taste: Many individuals with sinusitis report a decrease in their ability to smell or taste.
6. Fever: While you noted that you do not have a fever, it is worth mentioning that some people with sinusitis may experience a mild fever.
7. Eye Symptoms: The feeling of "foggy" vision you described could be related to sinus pressure affecting the areas around the eyes.
Given your symptoms, it is advisable to seek medical attention, especially if they persist for more than a week, worsen, or are accompanied by a high fever, severe headache, or swelling around the eyes. A healthcare provider can conduct a thorough examination, which may include a physical exam and possibly imaging studies like a CT scan, to confirm a diagnosis of sinusitis.
In terms of treatment, it often depends on the underlying cause. If the sinusitis is viral, it may resolve on its own, and treatment focuses on symptom relief, such as using saline nasal sprays, decongestants, or pain relievers. If a bacterial infection is suspected, antibiotics may be prescribed. Additionally, if allergies are contributing to your symptoms, antihistamines or nasal corticosteroids may be recommended.
It's also important to stay hydrated and consider using a humidifier to help ease nasal congestion. If you have a history of recurrent sinusitis or if your symptoms are severe, your doctor may refer you to an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist for further evaluation and management.
In summary, your symptoms do suggest the possibility of sinusitis, and it would be wise to consult with a healthcare professional for a definitive diagnosis and appropriate treatment. Taking prompt action can help alleviate your discomfort and prevent potential complications. Thank you for reaching out, and I hope you find relief soon!
