Why Is My Stomach Distended? Bloating and Diet at 15 - Gastroenterology and Hepatology

Share to:

Could it be that you're overweight?

I am 15 years old, and my abdomen (from below the chest to the lower abdomen) is more protruded than my chest, even though I have visible abdominal muscles (I can see six-pack abs under normal circumstances).
Additionally, I am not overweight, measuring 165 cm and weighing 52 kg.
Could this be due to bloating or is it caused by my habit of eating late-night snacks?

KEN, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2002/01/22

Dr. Yang Guojun reply Gastroenterology and Hepatology

I think you are still obese.
You can use high-frequency and low-frequency ultrasound scanning to analyze whether it is muscle or fat.

Bloating, or abdominal distension, can be a common issue, especially for teenagers like yourself. At 15 years old, your body is still developing, and various factors can contribute to the feeling of a distended stomach. Let's explore some possible reasons for your symptoms and how your diet and lifestyle may play a role.

1. Dietary Choices: The foods you consume can significantly impact your digestive health. If you have a habit of eating late at night (like having midnight snacks), this can lead to bloating. Eating heavy or rich foods, especially those high in fats or sugars, can slow down digestion and cause your stomach to feel full or distended. Additionally, foods that are high in fiber, such as beans, lentils, and certain vegetables, can also lead to gas production in the intestines, resulting in bloating.

2. Eating Habits: How you eat is just as important as what you eat. Eating too quickly can cause you to swallow air, which can lead to bloating. It's essential to take your time while eating, chew your food thoroughly, and avoid drinking large amounts of carbonated beverages, which can introduce more gas into your digestive system.

3. Food Intolerances: Some individuals may have intolerances to certain foods, such as lactose (found in dairy products) or gluten (found in wheat products). If you notice that bloating occurs after consuming specific foods, it might be worth considering an elimination diet or consulting with a healthcare professional to identify any potential food intolerances.

4. Physical Activity: Regular exercise can help promote healthy digestion and reduce bloating. If you lead a sedentary lifestyle, incorporating more physical activity can help alleviate some of the discomfort associated with bloating. Even simple activities like walking can stimulate digestion and help reduce gas buildup.

5. Hydration: Staying well-hydrated is crucial for digestive health. Drinking enough water can help your digestive system function more efficiently and reduce the likelihood of constipation, which can also contribute to a feeling of fullness or bloating.

6. Stress and Anxiety: Emotional factors can also play a role in digestive health. Stress and anxiety can lead to changes in your eating habits and digestion, potentially resulting in bloating. Finding ways to manage stress, such as through relaxation techniques, exercise, or talking to someone about your feelings, can be beneficial.

7. Hormonal Changes: At your age, hormonal fluctuations can also affect your body, including your digestive system. This can lead to temporary bloating, especially during certain times of the month for females.

In conclusion, while occasional bloating can be normal, persistent or severe bloating should not be ignored. If you find that your symptoms are affecting your daily life or if you experience additional symptoms such as severe pain, changes in bowel habits, or weight loss, it would be wise to consult a healthcare professional. They can help assess your situation more thoroughly and provide tailored advice based on your specific needs.
In the meantime, consider keeping a food diary to track what you eat and how it affects your bloating. This can help you identify any patterns or triggers that may be contributing to your symptoms. Remember, taking care of your digestive health is essential for your overall well-being, especially during your teenage years when your body is undergoing significant changes.
