Chronic Pharyngitis: Exploring Causes and Effective Treatments - Traditional Chinese Medicine

Chronic pharyngitis?

Hello, I have been diagnosed with chronic pharyngitis by a Western medicine doctor, but the cause is unclear.
A previous doctor suspected it was due to recurrent colds.
Later, another doctor suggested it might be caused by allergic rhinitis leading to post-nasal drip, while another mentioned gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), as I have a history of this condition.
However, I have not found effective treatment.
I also tried traditional Chinese medicine for a while, including Da Chai Hu Decoction, She Gan, and Gan Lu Drink, but there were no significant results.
Could you please advise on a better treatment approach? Thank you.

Mr. Huang, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2011/05/03

Dr. Yan Sumei reply Traditional Chinese Medicine

Dear Mr.
Huang,
Hello! I am glad to receive your letter! Chronic pharyngitis is commonly seen in individuals who need to speak for extended periods, such as teachers, salespeople, and performers.
It is primarily caused by recurrent respiratory infections, allergic rhinitis, and gastroesophageal reflux disease.
Chronic pharyngitis can indeed be a persistent condition that is difficult to cure.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the approach to treating chronic pharyngitis requires careful observation, listening, inquiry, and pulse diagnosis.
It is not easy to provide a simple solution.
Based on your letter, since you have tried treatments like Da Chai Hu Decoction and Gan Lu Drink without noticeable effects, it seems that cold medications are not beneficial, suggesting a mixed pattern of cold and heat.
Therefore, a more tailored treatment plan is necessary, requiring a comprehensive diagnosis.
For chronic conditions, self-care is crucial.
I recommend a light diet, emphasizing fresh fruits and vegetables while avoiding irritating foods such as spicy, fried, barbecued items, garlic, strong tea, coffee, sweets, ice products, as well as tobacco and alcohol.
Additionally, when going outside, it is best to wear a mask and stay away from paint fumes, unpleasant odors, and air pollution.

Minimize talking to allow your throat to rest, and maintain a regular lifestyle to avoid fatigue and late nights.
Thank you once again for your letter! Wishing you all the best and good health!
Sincerely,
Yan Su-Mei

More Info

Chronic pharyngitis can be a frustrating and persistent condition, often resulting from various underlying causes. Your experience with multiple diagnoses, including allergic rhinitis and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), highlights the complexity of this issue. Understanding the potential causes and exploring effective treatments is crucial for managing your symptoms.

Causes of Chronic Pharyngitis
1. Allergic Rhinitis: This condition can lead to post-nasal drip, where mucus from the nasal passages drips down the back of the throat, causing irritation and inflammation. Allergens such as dust mites, pollen, and pet dander can trigger these symptoms.

2. Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD): GERD occurs when stomach acid flows back into the esophagus, which can lead to throat irritation and chronic cough. The acid can reach the throat, causing inflammation and discomfort.

3. Infections: Chronic infections, whether viral or bacterial, can lead to persistent throat inflammation. Even after the initial infection has resolved, residual inflammation may continue.

4. Environmental Factors: Exposure to irritants such as smoke, pollution, or dry air can exacerbate throat irritation. Additionally, frequent throat clearing or coughing can further irritate the pharynx.

5. Other Medical Conditions: Conditions like sinusitis, thyroid disorders, or even certain autoimmune diseases can contribute to chronic pharyngitis.

Effective Treatments
1. Addressing Allergies: If allergic rhinitis is a contributing factor, managing your allergies is essential. This may include:
- Antihistamines: These can help reduce nasal congestion and post-nasal drip.

- Nasal Corticosteroids: These sprays can effectively reduce inflammation in the nasal passages.

- Allergy Immunotherapy: For long-term relief, consider discussing allergy shots or sublingual tablets with an allergist.

2. Managing GERD: If GERD is suspected, lifestyle modifications and medications can be beneficial:
- Dietary Changes: Avoiding trigger foods (spicy, fatty, or acidic foods) can help reduce reflux symptoms.

- Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs): Medications like Omeprazole can decrease stomach acid production and alleviate symptoms.

- Elevating the Head During Sleep: This can help prevent nighttime reflux.

3. Hydration and Humidification: Keeping your throat moist is vital. Drink plenty of fluids and consider using a humidifier, especially in dry environments.

4. Throat Lozenges and Gargles: Over-the-counter throat lozenges can provide temporary relief. Gargling with warm salt water may also help soothe throat irritation.

5. Avoiding Irritants: Stay away from smoke, strong odors, and other environmental irritants that can exacerbate your symptoms.

6. Consulting Specialists: If symptoms persist despite treatment, consider consulting an ENT specialist or a gastroenterologist for further evaluation. They may recommend additional tests, such as a laryngoscopy or pH monitoring, to assess the extent of your condition.

7. Alternative Therapies: While you mentioned trying traditional Chinese medicine, some patients find relief through acupuncture or herbal remedies. However, it's essential to discuss these options with your healthcare provider to ensure they complement your current treatment plan.

Conclusion
Chronic pharyngitis can stem from various causes, and effective treatment often requires a multifaceted approach. By addressing underlying conditions such as allergic rhinitis and GERD, making lifestyle changes, and possibly consulting specialists, you can work towards alleviating your symptoms. It's essential to maintain open communication with your healthcare providers and report any changes in your condition to tailor your treatment effectively.
