A hard lump under the male nipple?

I am a 22-year-old male, and recently while showering, I discovered a hard lump under my right nipple.
It is somewhat painful, but the pain subsides after a few days, although the lump remains (it hurts a bit when pressed).
I would like to know if I should get this checked out.
I have not experienced this before (I had a hard lump under my nipple during puberty, but when I asked a doctor, they said it was normal and it eventually resolved).

Felix, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2011/05/04

Dr. Zhou Jiazhen reply Breast and Thyroid

Dear Felix,
Hello.
The hard lumps in the nipples during puberty are mostly manifestations of gynecomastia.
In most cases, self-monitoring is sufficient.
However, if there is an increase in size or if symptoms persist, it is advisable to visit a breast surgery clinic for an examination by a specialist.
While the majority are indeed gynecomastia, it is best to rule out the rare possibility of malignancy.
Wishing you safety and health.
Sincerely,
Dr.

When it comes to hard lumps under male nipples, particularly in a 22-year-old male, there are several important considerations to keep in mind. The presence of a hard lump beneath the nipple can be concerning, but it is essential to understand the potential causes and when to seek medical advice.

Firstly, it is not uncommon for males to experience changes in breast tissue during puberty, which can lead to the development of lumps or swelling. This condition, known as gynecomastia, is often benign and can resolve on its own. However, since you are now 22 years old and have noticed a new lump that is painful at times, it is prudent to take this seriously and seek medical evaluation.

There are several potential causes for a hard lump under the nipple in males:
1. Gynecomastia: As mentioned, this is a common condition characterized by the enlargement of breast tissue in males. It can be caused by hormonal changes, certain medications, or underlying health conditions. If the lump is soft and tender, it may be related to gynecomastia.

2. Lipoma: This is a benign tumor made of fat tissue that can occur anywhere in the body, including under the skin of the breast area. Lipomas are generally soft and movable, but they can sometimes feel firm.

3. Cysts: These fluid-filled sacs can develop in various tissues, including breast tissue. They can be painful and may fluctuate in size.

4. Infection or Inflammation: Conditions such as mastitis (inflammation of breast tissue) can occur in males, especially if there is an infection. This can lead to pain, swelling, and the formation of lumps.

5. Breast Cancer: Although rare, males can develop breast cancer. A hard, persistent lump that is painful or changes in size or shape should be evaluated by a healthcare professional to rule out this possibility.

Given that you have noticed a hard lump that causes pain and has not resolved over time, it is advisable to seek medical attention. A healthcare provider will likely perform a physical examination and may recommend imaging studies, such as an ultrasound, to assess the lump further. In some cases, a biopsy may be necessary to determine the nature of the lump.

In summary, while many lumps under the nipple in males can be benign, it is essential to have any new or persistent lumps evaluated by a healthcare professional. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial, especially if there is any concern about the possibility of malignancy. Do not hesitate to reach out to a doctor for a thorough evaluation and peace of mind.
