Numbness in the hands and feet?
Hello Dr.
Yeh, I have been experiencing frequent numbness from my elbow to my fingers, especially at night while sleeping, which becomes quite uncomfortable.
Could this be related to poor blood circulation, or is it possibly connected to my daily consumption of wine over the past month? Could the residual alcohol in my body be causing issues with my peripheral nerves? I would appreciate your response.
Thank you!

Dr. Ye Boshou reply Neurology
Numbness in the elbow extending to the fingers may be caused by ulnar nerve compression.
It is advisable to avoid pressure on the elbow, such as resting the chin on the hand.
Alcoholic neuropathy typically occurs only with long-term or excessive alcohol consumption.
If numbness persists, it is recommended to consult a neurologist for a nerve conduction velocity study.

Numbness in the hands and feet, particularly when it occurs during sleep, can be a concerning symptom that may arise from various underlying causes. Understanding these causes and potential solutions is crucial for managing your discomfort effectively.
Possible Causes of Numbness
1. Nerve Compression: One of the most common reasons for numbness in the hands and feet is nerve compression. This can occur due to sleeping in an awkward position, which puts pressure on nerves, particularly in the arms and legs. Conditions like carpal tunnel syndrome, where the median nerve is compressed at the wrist, can also lead to numbness in the fingers.
2. Poor Circulation: Blood flow issues can lead to numbness. Conditions such as peripheral artery disease (PAD) can restrict blood flow to the extremities, causing numbness and tingling sensations. If you notice that your hands and feet feel cold or change color, this could indicate a circulation problem.
3. Alcohol Consumption: Chronic alcohol use can lead to peripheral neuropathy, a condition where the peripheral nerves are damaged. This can result in numbness, tingling, and pain in the hands and feet. If you have been consuming wine nightly, it could potentially contribute to these symptoms, especially if your overall alcohol intake is high.
4. Vitamin Deficiencies: Deficiencies in certain vitamins, particularly B vitamins (like B12), can lead to nerve damage and numbness. If your diet lacks these essential nutrients, it may be worth considering dietary adjustments or supplements.
5. Diabetes: Diabetes can lead to diabetic neuropathy, a condition that affects the nerves and can cause numbness, tingling, and pain in the extremities. If you have a history of diabetes or risk factors for it, this could be a significant concern.
6. Other Medical Conditions: Conditions such as multiple sclerosis, hypothyroidism, or autoimmune diseases can also lead to numbness in the hands and feet. If your symptoms persist or worsen, it may be necessary to explore these possibilities with a healthcare provider.
Solutions and Recommendations
1. Adjust Sleeping Position: If you suspect that your sleeping position is causing nerve compression, try to adjust your posture. Use supportive pillows to maintain a neutral position for your arms and legs.
2. Limit Alcohol Intake: If you believe that alcohol consumption is contributing to your symptoms, consider reducing your intake. This can help improve nerve health and overall well-being.
3. Dietary Changes: Ensure that your diet is rich in essential vitamins and minerals. Incorporate foods high in B vitamins, such as fish, poultry, eggs, dairy products, and leafy greens. If necessary, consult with a healthcare provider about taking vitamin supplements.
4. Regular Exercise: Engaging in regular physical activity can improve circulation and nerve health. Activities like walking, swimming, or yoga can be beneficial.
5. Consult a Healthcare Provider: If your symptoms persist, it is essential to consult a healthcare provider. They may recommend tests such as blood tests, nerve conduction studies, or imaging studies to determine the underlying cause of your numbness.
6. Manage Underlying Conditions: If you have any underlying health conditions, such as diabetes or thyroid issues, managing these conditions effectively can help alleviate symptoms.
In conclusion, numbness in the hands and feet can stem from various causes, including nerve compression, poor circulation, alcohol consumption, vitamin deficiencies, and underlying medical conditions. By understanding these potential causes and implementing appropriate lifestyle changes, you can work towards alleviating your symptoms. However, it is crucial to seek professional medical advice for a comprehensive evaluation and tailored treatment plan.
