Erectile dysfunction

I have been maintaining a normal diet and lifestyle, but currently, the hardness of my erections is not what it used to be.
Whether I try DIY methods or watch adult films, the hardness is insufficient, and if there is no continuous stimulation, the erection softens quickly.
When I do stimulate the penis, it takes a long time to achieve a firm erection.
I have also noticed that morning or nighttime erections are not as hard as before.
When it comes to sexual intercourse, I often struggle to penetrate due to insufficient hardness.
I consulted a urologist who suspected erectile dysfunction and prescribed Viagra.
While the medication does help, allowing me to maintain a semi-erect state at any time, it still requires stimulation to achieve sufficient hardness.
Is this truly erectile dysfunction? I currently have a high sexual desire, but due to inadequate erections, I often lose interest halfway through.

Doctor, I have a few questions:
1.
Based on the above situation, is this confirmed as moderate erectile dysfunction? (I can still achieve slight erections.)
2.
Are there any recommended over-the-counter supplements or medications from chain pharmacies?
3.
Do hospitals covered by health insurance provide effective medications to assist with erections? I would prefer not to rely solely on Viagra for temporary needs.

Thank you for your assistance, doctor.

Hello Mr.
X:
1.
You are experiencing erectile dysfunction.
To determine the severity, it may be necessary to visit a major hospital for erectile-related examinations, such as measuring actual erectile hardness and performing cavernosography, in order to identify the underlying causes.

2.
There are no specific medications recommended at this time.

3.
It is advised to undergo examinations and then pursue treatment based on the identified causes.
For instance, if the issue is due to venous leakage, relevant surgical options may be available.
If you have any further questions or need more clarification, please feel free to ask, and we can discuss it further.

Sincerely,
Department of Urology, Taitung Hospital, Ministry of Health and Welfare

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a common condition that affects many men, and it can be caused by a variety of factors, including physical, psychological, and lifestyle influences. Based on your description, it seems you are experiencing symptoms consistent with moderate erectile dysfunction, characterized by difficulty achieving or maintaining an erection sufficient for sexual intercourse.
1. Understanding Your Symptoms: The symptoms you describe—difficulty achieving full erection hardness, rapid loss of erection, and the need for prolonged stimulation—are indeed indicative of erectile dysfunction. The fact that you can achieve some level of erection with stimulation, but it is not sufficient for penetration, suggests that while you may not have complete erectile dysfunction, you are experiencing significant challenges that could be classified as moderate erectile dysfunction. This condition can lead to frustration and decreased sexual interest, as you noted, which is a common psychological consequence of ED.

2. Potential Causes: The causes of erectile dysfunction can be multifaceted. Physical causes may include vascular issues, hormonal imbalances, or nerve damage, while psychological causes can involve stress, anxiety, or depression. Lifestyle factors such as diet, exercise, and substance use (like alcohol or tobacco) can also play a significant role. Since you mentioned that your diet and lifestyle are normal, it may be beneficial to explore any psychological factors or stressors that could be affecting your sexual health.

3. Treatment Options: You mentioned that you have been prescribed Viagra (sildenafil), which is a common treatment for erectile dysfunction. It works by increasing blood flow to the penis, helping to achieve and maintain an erection. The fact that you experienced improvement while on the medication suggests that your erectile dysfunction may have a physical component, likely related to blood flow. However, relying solely on medication may not address the underlying causes of your ED.

4. Lifestyle Modifications: In addition to medication, consider making lifestyle changes that can improve erectile function. Regular exercise, a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins, and maintaining a healthy weight can all contribute to better sexual health. Reducing stress through mindfulness practices, therapy, or relaxation techniques can also be beneficial.

5. Consulting Healthcare Providers: If you are looking for alternatives to Viagra or want to explore other treatment options, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare provider. Many pharmacies offer a range of erectile dysfunction medications, and your healthcare provider can help you find the most suitable option for your needs. Additionally, some healthcare facilities may offer counseling or therapy for men experiencing psychological barriers to sexual performance.

6. Follow-Up Care: Regular follow-up with your healthcare provider is crucial. They can monitor your condition, adjust medications if necessary, and provide support for any psychological aspects of erectile dysfunction. If you find that your symptoms persist despite treatment, further evaluation may be warranted to rule out any underlying health issues.

In summary, while your symptoms do indicate erectile dysfunction, there are various treatment avenues available, including medication, lifestyle changes, and psychological support. It is important to work closely with your healthcare provider to develop a comprehensive approach that addresses both the physical and psychological aspects of your condition.
