Do psychiatric medications affect physical health?
Hello, doctor: I previously inquired about some symptoms and sought treatment from a traditional Chinese medicine practitioner.
However, the practitioner advised me that my symptoms were related to taking too many medications and suggested that I stop taking the medication for panic disorder.
Is this correct? 1.
Metabolic syndrome (obesity) 2.
Panic disorder 3.
Premenstrual syndrome 4.
Unexplained night sweats 5.
Generalized muscle and joint pain 6.
Weakness and qi deficiency.
The traditional Chinese medicine practitioner believes that my ability to express myself and communicate is not an issue.
If I have trouble sleeping, I only need to take sleeping pills, while other medications should be stopped or reduced by half.
Is this correct? Can taking too many medications really have an impact? However, my psychiatrist says that my symptoms are not yet under control and that the medications I am taking will not cause any adverse effects.
It is not advisable to stop suddenly.
What should I do? Thank you!

Dr. Yan Sumei reply Traditional Chinese Medicine
Dear Xiao Zhuan,
I am glad to receive your letter! The Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) physician you consulted believes that your insomnia can be managed with just sleeping pills, and that other medications should be stopped or reduced by half.
However, the psychiatrist states that your symptoms are not yet under control and that the medications you are taking will not cause any adverse effects, so they should not be stopped abruptly.
It seems that your issue requires input from a higher authority.
I am unable to mediate between these two practitioners of Western and Traditional Chinese medicine.
I apologize for not being able to provide you with a satisfactory answer.
Wishing you all the best!
Sincerely,
Yen Su-Mei

The concerns you have regarding psychiatric medications and their potential impact on physical health are quite valid and shared by many patients. It is essential to understand the complex interplay between psychiatric medications and physical health, especially when dealing with multiple symptoms and treatments.
1. Understanding Psychiatric Medications: Psychiatric medications, including antidepressants, anxiolytics, and antipsychotics, can have various side effects that may influence physical health. For instance, some medications can lead to weight gain, metabolic syndrome, or other physical health issues. However, the benefits of these medications often outweigh the risks when they are used appropriately. It is crucial to have a thorough discussion with your psychiatrist about the specific medications you are taking and their potential side effects.
2. Metabolic Syndrome and Weight Gain: Medications such as certain antipsychotics and antidepressants can contribute to weight gain and metabolic syndrome. This syndrome is characterized by a cluster of conditions, including increased blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess body fat around the waist, and abnormal cholesterol levels. If you are experiencing weight gain or other symptoms associated with metabolic syndrome, it is essential to discuss this with your psychiatrist. They may consider adjusting your medication or implementing lifestyle changes to mitigate these effects.
3. Panic Disorder and Medication Management: For conditions like panic disorder, medications can be beneficial in managing symptoms. However, it is also essential to consider non-pharmacological treatments, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), which can provide long-term benefits without the side effects associated with medications. If your symptoms are not adequately controlled, it may be necessary to continue medication while exploring additional therapeutic options.
4. Physical Symptoms and Medication: Symptoms such as unexplained sweating, muscle aches, and fatigue can sometimes be side effects of medications. However, they can also be related to the underlying psychiatric condition itself. It is essential to differentiate between medication side effects and symptoms of the underlying disorder. Keeping a detailed symptom diary can help you and your healthcare provider identify patterns and make informed decisions about your treatment.
5. Communication with Healthcare Providers: It is crucial to maintain open communication with both your psychiatrist and any other healthcare providers, including traditional Chinese medicine practitioners. Each practitioner may have different perspectives on your treatment, and it is essential to ensure that everyone is on the same page regarding your care. If you feel that your concerns are not being addressed, consider seeking a second opinion from another psychiatrist who may provide a different perspective on your treatment plan.
6. Tapering Medications: If a decision is made to reduce or stop certain medications, it should be done cautiously and under the guidance of a healthcare professional. Abruptly stopping psychiatric medications can lead to withdrawal symptoms or a resurgence of the underlying condition. A gradual tapering plan is often recommended to minimize potential withdrawal effects and ensure stability.
7. Holistic Approach: It may be beneficial to adopt a holistic approach to your health, incorporating lifestyle changes such as regular exercise, a balanced diet, and stress management techniques. These changes can help improve both your physical and mental health and may reduce the need for higher doses of medication.
In conclusion, while psychiatric medications can have side effects that impact physical health, they are often necessary for managing mental health conditions. It is essential to work closely with your healthcare providers to monitor your symptoms, adjust medications as needed, and explore additional therapeutic options. Your health is a priority, and finding the right balance between medication and lifestyle changes can lead to improved overall well-being.
