Regarding rib adenitis?

I would like to ask if hidradenitis suppurativa is related to nails, as I have noticed that my toenails have been uneven for a long time.
I found online that it might be related to hidradenitis suppurativa.
Could you please tell me what symptoms are associated with hidradenitis suppurativa? Thank you!

Xiao Yang, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2011/07/13

Dr. Jian Shuntian reply Pulmonology

Hello, it seems that there is no diagnostic term for rib gland inflammation in the medical terminology used in Taiwan.
If there are abnormalities in the nails, it is advisable to consult a dermatologist for further examination and treatment.
Thank you for your inquiry, and I wish you good health! Sincerely, Dr.
Jian Shun-Tian, Chief of Thoracic Medicine.

More Info

Costochondritis is an inflammation of the cartilage that connects a rib to the sternum (breastbone). This condition can cause localized chest pain, which may mimic the pain associated with a heart attack or other heart conditions. The pain is typically sharp and can worsen with certain movements, deep breaths, or coughing. It is often exacerbated by physical activity or pressure on the chest wall.
While costochondritis primarily affects the chest area, it is not directly linked to changes in the nails. However, certain systemic conditions that might cause costochondritis could also lead to nail changes. For instance, inflammatory conditions like rheumatoid arthritis can affect both the joints and the nails, leading to changes such as pitting, ridges, or discoloration.
The changes you are observing in your toenails, such as the uneven surface, could be due to a variety of factors, including fungal infections, trauma, or other dermatological conditions. Nail changes are typically not a direct symptom of costochondritis. However, if you are experiencing other symptoms associated with costochondritis, such as chest pain, tenderness in the rib area, or difficulty taking deep breaths, it is essential to consult a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation.

In terms of symptoms, costochondritis can present with:
1. Localized Pain: The most common symptom is localized pain in the chest, which may radiate to the back or abdomen. The pain is often sharp and can be reproduced by pressing on the affected area.

2. Tenderness: There may be tenderness when pressing on the costosternal, costochondral, or costovertebral joints.

3. Worsening Pain with Movement: Activities that involve upper body movement, deep breathing, or coughing can exacerbate the pain.

4. Swelling: In some cases, there may be swelling in the affected area, although this is less common.

5. Difficulty Breathing: While not a direct symptom, some individuals may experience discomfort when taking deep breaths due to pain.

If you are experiencing persistent changes in your toenails alongside symptoms of costochondritis, it would be prudent to discuss these concerns with your healthcare provider. They may recommend a physical examination, imaging studies, or laboratory tests to determine the underlying cause of both your chest pain and nail changes.

In summary, while costochondritis itself does not cause nail changes, it is essential to consider the broader context of your health. If you have concerns about your symptoms or nail changes, seeking medical advice is the best course of action. Your healthcare provider can help determine if there is a connection between your symptoms and recommend appropriate treatment options.
