A painful, swollen bump?
Hello, doctor: In the past two to three days, I have developed two small, red bumps on my face.
I have experienced similar issues before, particularly on my chin.
Each time, the situation is quite similar; it starts with a small bump that feels somewhat hard under the skin.
When pressed, it is painful, and the pain intensifies over several days before eventually subsiding.
However, it leaves behind deep, dark scars.
Some of the small bumps disappear, while others leave behind tiny hard lumps that can only be felt when pressed.
What kind of condition is this? Additionally, what causes this condition? I am very worried that it might continue to worsen, as I have rarely had two bumps appear in such a short time...

This is likely deep acne, as it is blocked deep within the pores and cannot be expelled, leading to the aforementioned condition.
Generally, it will resolve on its own, but it may take a longer time.
Alternatively, the use of topical retinoids can help accelerate skin metabolism.

The symptoms you are describing—painful red bumps on your face that feel hard to the touch and cause discomfort—could be indicative of several dermatological conditions. Based on your description, it sounds like you might be experiencing a form of cystic acne or possibly folliculitis, which is an inflammation of the hair follicles.
Cystic acne is characterized by large, painful lumps beneath the skin that can become inflamed and filled with pus. These cysts can be quite painful and may take time to resolve, often leaving behind dark spots or scars once they heal. The fact that you have experienced similar bumps in the past suggests that this may be a recurring issue for you.
Folliculitis, on the other hand, occurs when hair follicles become inflamed, often due to infection. This can lead to red, painful bumps that may resemble acne. In some cases, folliculitis can be caused by bacteria, fungi, or irritation from shaving or wearing tight clothing.
There are several potential causes for these bumps:
1. Hormonal Changes: Fluctuations in hormones, particularly during puberty, menstruation, or due to hormonal medications, can lead to increased oil production in the skin, resulting in acne.
2. Bacterial Infection: Bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus can infect hair follicles, leading to painful bumps.
3. Blocked Pores: Excess oil, dead skin cells, and bacteria can clog pores, leading to the formation of acne.
4. Skin Irritation: Certain products, such as heavy creams or makeup, can irritate the skin and lead to breakouts.
5. Diet and Lifestyle: High-glycemic foods, dairy products, and stress can exacerbate acne conditions.
To address your concerns and manage these symptoms, consider the following steps:
- Avoid Picking or Squeezing: This can lead to further inflammation and scarring.
- Maintain a Clean Face: Use a gentle cleanser to keep your skin clean and free from excess oil and dirt.
- Topical Treatments: Over-the-counter treatments containing benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid can help reduce inflammation and clear up acne. If the bumps are due to folliculitis, an antibacterial wash may be beneficial.
- Moisturize: Use a non-comedogenic moisturizer to keep your skin hydrated without clogging pores.
- Consult a Dermatologist: If the bumps persist, worsen, or if you experience significant discomfort, it’s essential to consult a dermatologist. They can provide a proper diagnosis and may prescribe topical or oral medications, such as antibiotics or retinoids, to help manage your condition.
- Monitor Your Diet: Consider keeping a food diary to identify any potential dietary triggers that may be contributing to your skin issues.
- Stress Management: Since stress can exacerbate skin conditions, incorporating relaxation techniques such as yoga, meditation, or regular exercise may help improve your overall skin health.
In summary, while the painful red bumps on your face can be concerning, they are often manageable with proper care and treatment. It’s crucial to seek professional advice if you’re unsure about the nature of your symptoms or if they persist, as a dermatologist can provide tailored recommendations based on your specific condition. Remember, early intervention can often prevent more severe issues down the line.
