Crown headache
Due to long working hours, I am experiencing significant stress, insufficient sleep, and severe insomnia, which has led to mental fatigue and a state of confusion.
Every morning, I wake up with stiffness and soreness in my shoulders and neck, and there is intense pain and discomfort when pressing on the area at the back of my head (the Baihui point, where my head rests on the pillow).
A Pei, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2011/10/18
Dr. Yan Sumei reply Traditional Chinese Medicine
Dear A-Pei,
Thank you for your hard work.
From your description, it is clear that you are a dedicated employee under a lot of stress.
Such a lifestyle can lead to various aches and pains, or even a multitude of health issues.
For the soreness, you might consider visiting a traditional Chinese medicine practitioner for acupuncture, or seek someone to provide you with a massage.
You could also purchase a set of cupping therapy tools to perform cupping on yourself along the meridians.
As for the insomnia, it can be more challenging to address.
When your eyelids close while trying to sleep, try to look downward with your eyes, clear your mind, and imagine yourself like a koala, soft and very comfortable, resting on a very soft bed.
If that doesn’t help, consider consulting a physician for some herbal remedies to aid sleep.
This is my response to you.
Wishing you peace, smooth sailing in all your endeavors, and may all your wishes come true!
Sincerely,
Yen Su-Mei

Understanding the causes of top-of-head pain, particularly in the context of stress, sleep deprivation, and associated physical discomfort, is essential for effective management and treatment. The top of the head, or the vertex region, can be a site of pain for various reasons, and traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) offers unique insights and treatment modalities.
Causes of Top of Head Pain
1. Tension-Type Headaches: Chronic stress and muscle tension can lead to tension-type headaches, which often manifest as a dull, aching pain and can be felt across the forehead, temples, or the top of the head. This type of headache is commonly associated with tightness in the neck and shoulder muscles, which can be exacerbated by poor posture during prolonged work hours.
2. Cervicogenic Headaches: These headaches originate from issues in the cervical spine (neck) and can radiate pain to the top of the head. Poor ergonomics while working, such as hunching over a computer, can contribute to neck strain and subsequent headaches.
3. Sleep Disorders: Insufficient sleep or poor-quality sleep can lead to headaches. Sleep deprivation affects the body's ability to recover, leading to increased sensitivity to pain and muscle tension.
4. Stress and Anxiety: Psychological factors such as stress and anxiety can trigger headaches. The body's response to stress often includes muscle tension, which can lead to pain in the head and neck regions.
5. Acupressure Points: In TCM, specific points on the body, such as Baihui (百會穴), located at the top of the head, are believed to be significant for relieving headaches. Pressure on this point can help alleviate tension and promote relaxation.
Traditional Chinese Medicine Solutions
1. Acupuncture: This ancient practice involves inserting thin needles into specific points on the body to relieve pain and promote healing. Acupuncture can help reduce muscle tension, improve blood circulation, and balance the body's energy (Qi), which may alleviate headaches.
2. Herbal Medicine: TCM often employs herbal remedies to address the underlying causes of headaches. Formulas may include ingredients that nourish the liver, calm the mind, and relieve tension. Common herbs used for headaches include chrysanthemum, peppermint, and ginger.
3. Tuina (Chinese Therapeutic Massage): This hands-on therapy focuses on manipulating the body's soft tissues to relieve pain and improve circulation. Tuina can be particularly effective for tension headaches by targeting tight muscles in the neck and shoulders.
4. Qi Gong and Tai Chi: These gentle exercises combine movement, meditation, and breathing techniques to promote relaxation and reduce stress. Regular practice can help manage stress levels and improve overall well-being, potentially reducing the frequency and intensity of headaches.
5. Lifestyle Modifications: TCM emphasizes the importance of a balanced lifestyle. Incorporating stress-reduction techniques, such as mindfulness meditation, regular physical activity, and adequate sleep, can significantly impact headache frequency and severity.
Conclusion
Top-of-head pain can stem from various factors, including muscle tension, stress, and sleep disturbances. Traditional Chinese medicine offers a holistic approach to treatment, focusing on restoring balance and promoting overall health. If you or someone you know is experiencing persistent headaches, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional for a comprehensive evaluation and tailored treatment plan. Integrating TCM practices with conventional medical advice can provide a well-rounded approach to managing and alleviating headache symptoms.
