Central chest pain?

Hello Doctor, I experienced pain in the center of my chest all night while I was sleeping.
It was a type of pain that would come and go.
What could be the possible issue? Recently, I have been taking the following medications: VOREN, SU=TON TABLETS, and CIMETIDINE.
Could these be affecting me? Thank you!

Tsai, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2011/10/24

Dr. Jian Shuntian reply Pulmonology

Hello, the causes of chest pain are complex and are significantly related to age and pre-existing conditions.
Without knowing your basic information, it is difficult to provide an accurate response.
Based solely on the medications you mentioned, they could potentially cause esophagitis or gastroesophageal reflux, both of which may be contributing factors to your chest pain.
Please consult a pulmonologist or a family medicine physician for an in-person examination to understand your actual condition.
Thank you.
Sincerely, Dr.
Jian Shun-Tian, Director of the Department of Pulmonary Medicine, Chest Hospital, Ministry of Health and Welfare.

More Info

Central chest pain can be a concerning symptom, and it is essential to understand its potential causes and the effects of medications you may be taking. The pain you describe, which comes and goes throughout the night, could be attributed to various factors, including musculoskeletal issues, gastrointestinal problems, or even cardiac conditions.
1. Potential Causes of Central Chest Pain:
- Musculoskeletal Pain: This is often due to strain or injury to the muscles or ribs in the chest area. Activities that involve heavy lifting or awkward movements can lead to such pain.

- Gastrointestinal Issues: Conditions like gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or esophageal spasms can cause chest pain that may mimic heart-related pain. Cimetidine, which you mentioned taking, is a medication that reduces stomach acid and is often used to treat GERD.

- Cardiac Issues: While less common in younger individuals without risk factors, conditions such as angina or even myocardial infarction (heart attack) can present as chest pain. It is crucial to rule out these serious conditions, especially if the pain is severe or accompanied by other symptoms like shortness of breath, sweating, or radiating pain to the arms or jaw.

2. Effects of Medications:
- Voren (Diclofenac): This is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that can cause gastrointestinal side effects, including stomach pain or discomfort, which could potentially contribute to chest pain if there is underlying reflux or irritation.

- Suton Tablets: Without specific details about the composition of Suton Tablets, it is challenging to assess their impact. However, if they contain any ingredients that affect the gastrointestinal tract or cardiovascular system, they could potentially contribute to your symptoms.

- Cimetidine: As mentioned, this medication is used for reducing stomach acid. While it is generally well-tolerated, it can interact with other medications and may cause side effects like dizziness or confusion in some individuals.

3. Recommendations:
- Seek Medical Attention: Given that you experienced persistent chest pain, it is advisable to consult a healthcare provider. They may perform a physical examination and possibly order tests such as an electrocardiogram (ECG), chest X-ray, or blood tests to rule out serious conditions.

- Monitor Symptoms: Keep track of any additional symptoms you experience, such as changes in heart rate, shortness of breath, or any other unusual sensations. This information can be helpful for your healthcare provider.

- Medication Review: Discuss your current medications with your doctor, especially if you suspect they may be contributing to your symptoms. They may consider adjusting your treatment regimen based on your symptoms and medical history.

In conclusion, while there are various potential causes for your central chest pain, it is crucial to approach this symptom with caution. The interplay between your medications and the pain you are experiencing should be evaluated by a healthcare professional to ensure appropriate management and to rule out any serious underlying conditions. Your health and safety are paramount, so do not hesitate to seek medical advice promptly.
