Secondary varicocele
I recently experienced my first episode of varicocele, and I have a cramping sensation in my testicles and abdomen.
I consulted a urologist, who said it is not very serious and is classified as grade II.
My questions are: 1.
Will the blue veins on the left side of the scrotum go away? 2.
After recovery, is there a chance of recurrence? (I am involved in dancing and weight training, and I am concerned that exercise might cause a relapse.) 3.
Given my situation, is it advisable to continue masturbating? Could it worsen my condition? (I have seen conflicting opinions online about this.) Thank you, Dr.
Hsu, for your guidance!

University Student: Hello.
1.
The visible veins are not going to disappear; they are the vessels on the surface of the scrotum.
The spermatic veins are located within the scrotum and can only be palpated, not seen.
2.
Recurrence depends on the individual's constitution and the surgical method used.
In more severe cases, about 10% of patients may experience recurrence.
3.
It’s no problem.
If there are any unclear points, feel free to ask again, and we can discuss and research further.

More Info
Grade II varicocele is a condition characterized by enlarged veins within the scrotum, which can lead to discomfort and potential fertility issues. It’s good to hear that you’ve consulted a urologist who has assessed your condition. Let’s address your questions one by one.
1. Will the left-sided varicocele disappear?
The left-sided varicocele may not completely disappear on its own, but its symptoms can improve with appropriate management. In many cases, conservative measures such as wearing supportive underwear, avoiding heavy lifting, and managing any underlying conditions can help alleviate discomfort. If the varicocele is not causing significant pain or fertility issues, your doctor may recommend monitoring it rather than immediate intervention. However, if the varicocele causes persistent discomfort or complications, surgical options such as varicocelectomy may be considered to remove or tie off the affected veins.
2. Will it recur after recovery?
Recurrence of varicocele after treatment can occur, but the likelihood depends on various factors, including the type of treatment received and individual anatomy. Engaging in activities such as dancing and weight training can potentially increase intra-abdominal pressure, which may contribute to the development or worsening of varicocele. However, moderate exercise is generally encouraged for overall health. It’s essential to listen to your body and avoid activities that exacerbate your symptoms. If you notice increased discomfort during or after exercise, it may be wise to consult your urologist for personalized advice.
3. Is it safe to masturbate with this condition?
Masturbation is generally considered safe for individuals with varicocele. It is a normal sexual activity that should not significantly impact your condition. However, if you experience pain or discomfort during or after masturbation, it may be best to limit the activity until you have a clearer understanding of your symptoms. If you have concerns about how masturbation might affect your varicocele, discussing this with your urologist can provide you with tailored guidance.
In summary, while Grade II varicocele may not completely resolve on its own, many individuals manage their symptoms effectively through lifestyle modifications and monitoring. Recurrence is possible, particularly if engaging in activities that increase abdominal pressure, so it’s crucial to be mindful of your body’s signals. Lastly, masturbation is generally safe, but if it causes discomfort, it may be worth reassessing your approach.
It’s essential to maintain open communication with your healthcare provider about your symptoms and any concerns you have. Regular follow-ups can help monitor your condition and ensure that any changes are addressed promptly. Additionally, consider discussing any specific activities or exercises you’re concerned about to receive tailored advice that aligns with your lifestyle and health goals.
