Are Unusual Bruising and Bleeding Side Effects of Dilatrend 6.25mg? - Cardiology

Is there a risk of unusual bleeding or bruising as side effects from taking "Daliquel 6.25mg"?

Hello Doctor: Five weeks ago, my current attending physician switched my original medications from Diovan 80 mg and Cintsu 240 mg (half a tablet) to HYZAAR 100/12.5 mg and Betaloc ZOK 100 mg (half a tablet).
After taking them for two weeks, I experienced discomfort with Betaloc ZOK 100 mg, so I changed to HYZAAR 100/12.5 mg and Dilatrend 6.25 mg.
On the fifth day of this regimen, I noticed some bruising on my palms, which then spread to my arms.
I quickly went to the emergency department, where the doctor ordered some blood tests; both my platelet and white blood cell counts were normal.
The next day, following the emergency physician's advice, I visited a dermatologist, who also deemed it not serious and prescribed an anti-inflammatory ointment for me to apply.
However, the night before last, while showering, I twisted a wet towel and noticed multiple bruises on my palms.
I would like to ask you, Doctor, if this condition could be a side effect of the medication?

Dr. He Dongjin reply Cardiology

Hello, I haven't heard of this medication having such side effects.
Are you taking any other medications? Given your age, why do you need to take the aforementioned medications? Is it for hypertension? Heart failure? We may need to further understand your condition in order to provide you with better advice.

Unusual bruising and bleeding can indeed be concerning side effects when taking certain medications, including Dilatrend (also known as Carvedilol). Dilatrend is primarily used for managing hypertension and heart failure, and while it is generally well-tolerated, it can have side effects that may affect the blood and vascular system.

In your case, the appearance of bruising on your hands and arms after starting Dilatrend could potentially be linked to the medication, although it is not a commonly reported side effect. Bruising can occur due to a variety of reasons, including the effects of medications on blood clotting mechanisms, vascular integrity, or even individual susceptibility to bruising.
Carvedilol, the active ingredient in Dilatrend, is a non-selective beta-blocker that can influence blood pressure and heart rate. While it is not primarily associated with significant bleeding or bruising, it can interact with other medications or underlying health conditions that may predispose an individual to these symptoms. For instance, if you are taking other medications that affect platelet function or blood clotting, this could compound the risk of bruising.
Additionally, the fact that your blood tests showed normal platelet and white blood cell counts is reassuring, as it suggests that there is no significant hematological issue at play. However, it is essential to consider that some individuals may have a heightened sensitivity to certain medications, which could lead to unusual side effects like bruising.

If you have experienced an increase in bruising or if it is accompanied by other symptoms such as prolonged bleeding, it is crucial to consult your healthcare provider. They may consider adjusting your medication regimen or conducting further evaluations to rule out other potential causes, such as liver function or other underlying conditions that could affect clotting.

In summary, while unusual bruising is not a widely recognized side effect of Dilatrend, it is essential to monitor these symptoms closely and communicate with your healthcare provider. They can provide personalized advice based on your overall health status, medication regimen, and any other factors that may be contributing to your symptoms. It is always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to unexpected changes in your health, especially when they involve bleeding or bruising.
