Knee injury from a car accident?
Hello, a few days ago after a car accident, I noticed that when I bend my knee and feel a pulling sensation, there is a sharp, tearing pain.
At first, I thought I had a fracture, but I can still walk.
I injured my right knee, and it has been a week since the accident, but I have noticed persistent swelling around the knee joint (medial side) that hasn't gone down.
I'm worried that there might be an issue that could affect my future mobility.
Additionally, while I can bend my knee, there is still a pulling, tearing pain when I reach a certain angle.
I would like to know how I should treat this and what areas might be injured.

It is best to obtain an X-ray to confirm that there is no fracture in the knee bone, and then check for any bony injuries to the medial ligament before deciding on the appropriate treatment.

More Info
Knee pain following a car accident can be concerning, especially when accompanied by swelling and sharp pain during movement. Based on your description, it seems you may be experiencing a soft tissue injury, such as a ligament sprain or a meniscus tear, rather than a fracture, since you are still able to walk. However, the persistent swelling and pain in the inner side of your knee warrant further evaluation.
Possible Causes of Your Knee Pain
1. Ligament Injuries: The knee is stabilized by several ligaments, including the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and the medial collateral ligament (MCL). A sudden impact, like that from a car accident, can lead to sprains or tears in these ligaments, resulting in pain, swelling, and instability.
2. Meniscus Tear: The meniscus is a C-shaped cartilage that acts as a cushion between your thigh bone and shin bone. A twisting motion during an accident can cause a tear in the meniscus, leading to pain, swelling, and difficulty bending the knee.
3. Patellar Injury: The patella (kneecap) can also be affected during an accident. A fracture or dislocation of the patella can cause significant pain and swelling.
4. Contusions or Bruising: Direct trauma to the knee can cause bruising of the soft tissues, which may lead to swelling and pain.
Recommended Treatment Options
1. Rest and Ice: Initially, it is crucial to rest your knee and avoid activities that exacerbate the pain. Applying ice to the swollen area for 15-20 minutes every few hours can help reduce swelling and numb the pain.
2. Compression and Elevation: Using a compression bandage can help control swelling. Elevating your knee above the level of your heart can also assist in reducing swelling.
3. Over-the-Counter Pain Relief: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen or naproxen, can help alleviate pain and reduce inflammation.
4. Physical Therapy: Once the acute pain and swelling decrease, engaging in physical therapy can be beneficial. A physical therapist can design a rehabilitation program that focuses on strengthening the muscles around the knee, improving flexibility, and restoring function.
5. Medical Evaluation: Given that your symptoms have persisted for over a week, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation. This may include a physical examination and imaging studies, such as an X-ray or MRI, to assess for any structural damage to the knee.
6. Avoiding High-Impact Activities: Until you receive a proper diagnosis and treatment plan, it is wise to avoid high-impact activities, such as running or jumping, which could exacerbate your injury.
Long-Term Considerations
If left untreated, knee injuries can lead to chronic pain and instability, potentially affecting your long-term mobility and quality of life. Early intervention is key to preventing complications, such as arthritis or chronic knee pain.
In summary, while it is possible that your knee pain is due to a soft tissue injury, a proper evaluation by a healthcare professional is essential to determine the exact cause and appropriate treatment. Be proactive in seeking care to ensure a full recovery and to minimize the risk of long-term issues.
