Swelling in the left arm, with overall soreness and numbness in the entire left hand?

Hello Doctor: I have been troubled by arm pain for several days.
It started on November 1st, when my left arm began to swell and hurt, and then my entire left hand started to feel numb and weak.
I initially thought it would improve in a few days, but there has been no sign of improvement; instead, the pain and numbness have worsened, preventing me from sleeping.
There is no external injury to my left arm, and only my left hand is experiencing these symptoms.
I would like to ask the doctor what kind of medical issue this might be.

eillen, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2012/01/15

Dr. Lan Shengxing reply Neurology

Dear Eillen, if you are experiencing swelling, pain, numbness, or tingling, it is important to consider local inflammation or nerve compression.
Have you consulted a neurologist yet? If you haven't, I recommend that you do so immediately.

Hello! Thank you for reaching out with your concerns regarding the swelling and numbness in your left arm. Based on your description, it sounds like you may be experiencing a condition that could be related to several potential causes, and I’d like to provide you with some insights into what might be happening.

Firstly, the symptoms of swelling, pain, and numbness in one arm, particularly the left arm, can be concerning. Given that you have mentioned these symptoms have persisted for several days and are worsening, it is important to consider a few possibilities.

1. Nerve Compression or Injury: One common cause of arm pain and numbness is nerve compression. This can occur due to various reasons, such as a herniated disc in the cervical spine, thoracic outlet syndrome, or even repetitive strain injuries. If a nerve is compressed, it can lead to symptoms like tingling, numbness, and weakness in the affected arm.

2. Circulatory Issues: Another possibility is that there may be an issue with blood flow to your arm. Conditions such as thoracic outlet syndrome can compress blood vessels, leading to swelling and pain. Additionally, if you have risk factors for vascular disease, such as high blood pressure or a history of smoking, it’s crucial to rule out any vascular issues.

3. Musculoskeletal Problems: It’s also possible that the pain and swelling could be related to musculoskeletal issues, such as a strain or sprain in the shoulder or upper back that is affecting the arm. This could be exacerbated by poor posture or repetitive movements.

4. Cardiac Concerns: Given that you are experiencing symptoms in your left arm, it’s essential to consider cardiac issues as well. While it’s less common for heart-related pain to present solely as arm pain, it can happen. Conditions such as angina or even a heart attack can manifest with pain radiating to the left arm. If you have any accompanying symptoms like chest pain, shortness of breath, or sweating, you should seek immediate medical attention.

5. Inflammatory Conditions: Conditions such as tendinitis or bursitis can also cause pain and swelling in the arm. These conditions often result from overuse or injury and can lead to inflammation in the surrounding tissues.

Given the persistence and worsening of your symptoms, I strongly recommend that you seek medical attention as soon as possible. A healthcare professional can perform a thorough examination, which may include imaging studies such as X-rays or MRIs, and possibly nerve conduction studies to assess for nerve involvement.
In the meantime, here are a few general recommendations:
- Rest: Avoid activities that exacerbate your symptoms.

- Ice: Applying ice to the affected area can help reduce swelling and numb pain.

- Elevation: Keeping your arm elevated may also help with swelling.

- Pain Relief: Over-the-counter pain medications like ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help manage pain and inflammation.

It’s crucial to address these symptoms promptly, especially considering the potential for serious underlying conditions. Please take care and seek medical advice soon. Your health is important, and getting a proper diagnosis will help you find the right treatment.
